About the Role

Base is hiring a Compliance Engineer to own the certification path for our batteries, inverters, grid-connected devices, and solar products. You'll take each product from early design through certification and launch, manage relationships with NRTLs and standards bodies, and ensure compliance never slows a product down.

Responsibilities

  • Own relationships with Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs), test labs, and standards bodies.
  • Build compliance into product requirements early, so engineering designs to the standard from day one.
  • Interpret, and when needed challenge, how standards apply across battery, inverter, and solar products.
  • Plan and run certification programs: test plans, setup, execution, and data analysis.
  • Review and approve hardware and system designs for compliance.
  • Work with firmware and controls engineers so software behavior supports certification.
  • Track new and changing standards, flag roadmap impact, and represent Base in working groups.
  • Be the internal expert on NEC and UL requirements.
  • Document processes, findings, and gaps so we stay audit-ready.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience taking a grid-tied product from concept through full certification.
  • Deep working knowledge of UL 1741, UL 9540, UL 9540A, UL 1973, and IEEE 1547.
  • Strong grasp of the NEC as it applies to energy storage and distributed energy resources.
  • Ability to turn standards language into clear engineering requirements.
  • Confidence pushing back on overly conservative interpretations of a standard.

Skills

  • Solar and PV standards: UL 3741, UL 2703, UL 61730, and UL 1703.
  • FCC Part 15 Subpart B EMI testing for power electronics.
  • UL 9540A thermal runaway fire testing.
  • Participation in standards committees or working groups.

About the Company

  • Base is America’s next-generation power company. We’re rebuilding the foundation of modern civilization–electricity–by deploying a vast network of distributed batteries that is transforming today’s fragile, centralized grid into a resilient and abundant system. We are engineers, operators, and creatives solving some of the most complex, interdisciplinary challenges of our time.
  • Our compliance team makes sure certification is never the reason a Base product ships late. We build standards into requirements from day one, run every certification program with test labs, and help shape the standards that govern home energy storage. Homeowners across the country rely on Base for whole-home backup and lower electricity bills. Our network of home batteries also helps keep the grid stable as demand climbs from AI, electrification, and extreme weather. We build in-house and expand at a speed and cost incumbents can't match, and this team makes that possible.
  • First Principles Thinking: Question assumptions. Principles > rules.
  • Operate at Base Pace: Focus on what matters, act quickly, and learn by doing.
  • Give & Get Feedback: Be direct, be humble, and maintain a growth mindset.
  • Everyone’s an Owner: Follow through on commitments and own results.
  • Strong Opinions, Loosely Held: Drive clarity and make calls with imperfect information.
  • Committed to the Mission: Rebuilding the grid is a big challenge. We work hard because we care deeply about the impact we’re creating. We work in-person. It’s not a 9-to-5. We are all-in.
  • Fun & Optimism Coexist with Grit: Collaboration and celebration coincide with the intensity of building real things.
  • Do the best work of your life at Base.
