About the Role

The American Express Developer Portal is a strategic platform enabling developers, partners, and businesses to discover, understand, test, and integrate with American Express digital and API capabilities. We are seeking a Senior Product Manager to shape the future of the American Express Developer Experience, focusing on product strategy, developer experience, APIs, identity, analytics, customer experience, and emerging AI technologies. The ideal candidate is a strong product thinker comfortable across customer and technical domains, capable of understanding developer journeys, identifying problems, using data for insights, and translating these into a product strategy and roadmap. While not requiring a software engineering background, technical depth is necessary for effective collaboration with Engineering and Architecture teams on APIs, authentication, security, platform capabilities, and AI-driven developer experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Define and evolve product vision, strategy, and roadmaps for key Developer Portal and Developer Experience capabilities.
  • Own important parts of the developer journey across discovery, evaluation, testing, integration, onboarding, and ongoing product usage.
  • Develop a deep understanding of developers, partners, customers, and internal stakeholders and translate their needs into scalable platform solutions.
  • Use customer feedback, CSAT, product analytics, qualitative research, operational insights, and behavioral data to identify opportunities and prioritize improvements.
  • Define and track meaningful product KPIs across customer experience, adoption, engagement, task completion, time to value, self service, and platform effectiveness.
  • Partner with Analytics teams to understand user intent, behavior, conversion, friction, and overall journey performance.
  • Work closely with Engineering and Architecture teams on technically complex product capabilities involving APIs, authentication, identity, access, integration, and platform architecture.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of modern API and security concepts including REST APIs, OAuth, OIDC, mTLS, application credentials, and access management.
  • Partner with Design and Research teams to create intuitive experiences for technical users while recognizing that Developer Experience extends beyond user interface design into documentation, APIs, workflows, tooling, platform behavior, and support.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify complex developer journeys through automation, standardization, and self service capabilities.
  • Help establish scalable product patterns for API discovery, documentation, onboarding, lifecycle management, and developer enablement.
  • Shape the evolution of AI enabled developer experiences, including the use of Generative AI, Retrieval Augmented Generation, intelligent assistants, AI agents, and Model Context Protocol.
  • Understand how AI agents may increasingly discover, interpret, and interact with APIs and digital capabilities and incorporate those changes into longer term product strategy.
  • Evaluate developer platform trends, emerging technologies, and industry practices to identify opportunities to improve developer productivity and customer experience.
  • Develop and prioritize product backlogs while maintaining a clear connection between individual capabilities, customer problems, product strategy, and measurable outcomes.
  • Navigate complex dependencies across Product, Engineering, Architecture, Design, Analytics, Security, Operations, and other enterprise stakeholders.
  • Communicate complex product and technical topics clearly to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Build alignment across teams and influence decisions without direct authority.
  • Champion a culture of customer learning, experimentation, data driven decision making, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • 5 or more years of Product Management experience building digital products, enterprise platforms, developer products, API products, or technically complex software products.
  • Demonstrated experience defining product vision, strategy, roadmaps, priorities, and measurable outcomes.
  • Strong product thinking and the ability to take ambiguous problems, identify root causes, evaluate tradeoffs, and develop clear recommendations.
  • Experience partnering closely with Engineering, Architecture, Design, Analytics, and business stakeholders.
  • Strong working knowledge of APIs and modern application integration concepts.
  • Familiarity with modern authentication, authorization, identity, and API security concepts including OAuth, OIDC, mTLS, application credentials, and access controls.
  • Experience using quantitative and qualitative signals including product analytics, customer feedback, CSAT, user research, operational metrics, and support insights to drive product decisions.
  • Strong understanding of customer journeys, user centered product development, experimentation, and iterative product improvement.
  • Ability to understand complex technical systems and work with technical teams to evaluate product and architecture tradeoffs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to simplify complex concepts and articulate the problem, rationale, recommendation, and expected outcome.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence across cross functional organizations and operate effectively in a complex enterprise environment.
  • Strong intellectual curiosity and learning agility, particularly around emerging technologies and evolving developer behaviors.
  • Experience building developer platforms, developer portals, API platforms, developer tooling, cloud platforms, identity products, or enterprise technology platforms.
  • Experience with OpenAPI, API lifecycle management, developer sandboxes, developer documentation, API observability, versioning, and related developer tooling.
  • Experience defining and measuring Developer Experience metrics such as task completion, time to first successful interaction, onboarding conversion, time to value, developer satisfaction, and self service adoption.
  • Strong understanding of Generative AI and the changing role of AI within developer workflows.
  • Familiarity with Retrieval Augmented Generation, AI assistants, agentic systems, tool use, and Model Context Protocol.
  • Ability to think strategically about how developers and AI agents may discover and consume APIs and enterprise capabilities in the future.
  • Experience applying AI or automation to developer workflows, product discovery, documentation, support, or platform experiences.
  • Experience working in a large scale or regulated enterprise environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
