About the Role
As a leading global financial services company, BNY harnesses cutting-edge AI and breakthrough technologies to drive transformative solutions. We are seeking a Director, AI / Machine Learning Data Engineer to join our Engineering AI Hub team.
Responsibilities
- Managing multiple, complex development projects, often global in scope
- Defining resource requirements and allocations, monitoring and improving quality, and ensuring best practice development techniques
- Providing subject matter expertise to teams, as needed
- Developing group-wide business plans and participating in firm-wide initiatives as per the direction from management
- Leading identification of risks and proposing and implementing mitigation plans
- Handling escalations and acting as an advocate for change management, encouraging innovation and creativity in technology solutions
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in computer science engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience required; advanced degree is beneficial
- 12+ years of experience in software development required; experience in the securities or financial services industry is a plus
- At least 6-8 years of experience managing development project teams
- Experience in the securities or financial services industry is a plus
- Strong AI/ML & GenAI Engineering: Hands-on experience building and productionizing AI/ML and Generative AI solutions.
- Strong understanding of LLMs, RAG, embeddings, vector databases, agentic AI and AI orchestration patterns.
- Experience integrating enterprise data and APIs into AI applications.
- Understanding of model evaluation, monitoring, responsible AI, security and governance.
- Strong Data Engineering Foundation.
- Excellent hands-on skills in Python, SQL and Spark/PySpark.
- Experience designing scalable batch and real-time/streaming data pipelines.
- Strong knowledge of data modeling, data quality, metadata, lineage and governance.
- Experience with modern platforms such as Snowflake and enterprise data lake/lakehouse architectures.
- AI Platform Engineering: Ability to contribute directly to the engineering and evolution of BNY’s AI Platform.
- Experience developing reusable AI services, APIs, frameworks and platform capabilities, rather than building only individual AI use cases.
- Strong understanding of Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD and cloud-native deployment for AI/ML workloads.
- Experience designing for scalability, resiliency, observability, security and cost efficiency.
- Proven experience leading AI/ML and data engineering teams while remaining technically engaged.
- Ability to define technical direction, architecture and engineering standards.
- Experience mentoring senior engineers and influencing architects and engineering leaders.
- Strong stakeholder management and ability to translate AI/data capabilities into measurable business outcomes.
- Demonstrated end-to-end ownership, from architecture and development through production deployment and operational support.
