About the Role

In this role, you will represent the people who ask patent analytics questions and work closely with product and engineering teams to define and encode what a genuinely useful answer looks like across different use cases, contexts, and data scenarios. You will test analytics and AI against these definitions and help shape future product development.

Responsibilities

Be the voice of end users (IP and portfolio managers, competitive-intelligence analysts, corporate development and M&A teams, R&D strategists, investors) to product and engineering teams, deeply understanding their needs.
Define what constitutes a good AI-assisted answer for uses like portfolio exploration, competitor benchmarking, trend analysis, target identification, portfolio optimization, and claim interpretation.
Capture definitions in governed, versioned question sets, graded example answers, and scoring rubrics for teams to build closed-loop evaluations.
Guide engineering teams in building evaluation frameworks.
Perform structured human-in-the-loop evaluations and expert reviews for AI assistant and analytics features.
Collaborate with other patent experts to develop scalable human evaluation methods.
Help engineering teams troubleshoot issues by tracing AI outputs to data sources.
Shape new AI use cases and features by identifying unmet customer needs and testing ideas.
Scope and lead independent projects from problem definition to stakeholder recommendations.
Track competitor and AI tool offerings to identify opportunities and risks.
Capture judgment in tools and AI assistants for scaled application and evaluate them for drift and recalibration.

Requirements

Experience using patent data to answer business questions in areas like patent analytics, IP consulting, competitive intelligence, portfolio management, IP due diligence, or technology scouting.
Strong technical background sufficient to critically read patents and interpret claims.
Solid understanding of patent data and its analytical pitfalls (e.g., family counting, ownership roll-ups, legal status, citations, classification, time effects).
Ability to clearly explain the trustworthiness of an analysis and suggest improvements.
Hands-on analytical skills with platforms, Excel, SQL, or Python.
Practical use of AI tools beyond basic chat, including effective prompting and understanding their limitations.
Confidence working independently and presenting recommendations to senior, non-specialist audiences.
Curiosity about technology, industries, and how decision-makers use analytical outputs.
