About the Role

The Commissioning and Start-Up (CSU) Lead HVAC/Cleanroom Engineer will lead commissioning and startup activities for HVAC and cleanroom environmental systems on semiconductor projects. This role ensures air handling, filtration, pressurization, and thermal control systems are installed, tested, commissioned, and turned over to support tool installation and production ramp-up. This position is accountable for HVAC and cleanroom commissioning from system definition through turnover. Scope includes make-up air units, recirculation air units, fan filter units, air handling units, chilled water systems, hot water systems, humidification and dehumidification equipment, exhaust systems, scrubber systems, and associated control sequences. The role verifies cleanroom spaces meet design requirements for ISO classification, pressure cascade, temperature, and relative humidity under operating conditions. This lead role directs and mentors commissioning engineers and technicians, coordinates with engineering, construction, QA/QC, vendors, and owner operations teams, and serves as the primary technical point of contact for HVAC and cleanroom systems during commissioning.

Responsibilities

  • Lead commissioning and startup for HVAC and cleanroom environmental systems, including make-up air units, recirculation air units, fan filter units, air handling units, exhaust systems, chilled water systems, hot water systems, and humidification equipment.
  • Develop commissioning plans, turnover packages, test procedures, checklists, and acceptance criteria for HVAC and cleanroom systems.
  • Verify cleanroom performance against ISO 14644 classification, pressure cascade, air change rate, temperature, and relative humidity requirements.
  • Direct testing, adjusting, and balancing (TAB) activities and review TAB reports for compliance with design intent.
  • Witness and evaluate factory acceptance tests (FATs) and site acceptance tests (SATs) for HVAC equipment and cleanroom systems.
  • Review mechanical drawings, P&IDs, ductwork layouts, control schematics, sequences of operation, and project specifications.
  • Perform functional performance testing and integrated systems testing, including failure mode and recovery scenarios affecting cleanroom environmental control.
  • Coordinate with the controls and automation team to verify BMS/BAS points, alarms, interlocks, and sequences of operation for HVAC and cleanroom systems.
  • Coordinate with commissioning, design engineering, construction, vendors, and owner representatives to resolve technical issues and maintain project alignment.
  • Enforce project safety requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, and cleanroom gowning and contamination control protocols throughout commissioning activities.
  • Lead punch list development, tracking, and closeout for HVAC and cleanroom systems through client turnover.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop commissioning engineers and technicians assigned to the HVAC and cleanroom scope.
  • Coordinate with commissioning, design engineering, construction, vendors, and owner representatives to resolve technical issues.
  • Review performance curves, metrics, trackers, and user feedback to identify trends and drive continuous improvement.

  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 8-10 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience must include commissioning and startup of HVAC and cleanroom systems in semiconductor, advanced manufacturing, pharmaceutical, or critical-environment facilities.
  • Commission HVAC systems, including air handling units, make-up air units, recirculation air units, fan filter units, chillers, boilers, pumps, and exhaust systems, with at least 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Working knowledge of cleanroom design and operation, including ISO 14644 classification, pressure cascade, contamination control, and gowning protocols.
  • Apply working knowledge of ASHRAE guidelines and standards.
  • Apply familiarity with SMACNA duct construction and leakage testing standards.
  • Apply knowledge of building management systems/building automation systems (BMS/BAS) and sequences of operation for cleanroom environmental control.
  • Experience directing testing, adjusting, and balancing (TAB) activities; NEBB or AABC certification is desirable.
  • Use commissioning software, such as SmartCompletions and other applicable digital tools.
  • Apply experience in commissioning or technical consulting, including facility design, engineering, construction management, or a related discipline.
  • Define owner goals, operational needs, building performance expectations, and related commissioning responsibilities.
