About the Role
Foresight is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to build the data foundation for their platform, transforming complex project data into clean, trusted, and well-modeled data that powers predictions, AI recommendations, analytics, and customer reporting. This is a hands-on role on a new team where data engineering is treated as product engineering, focusing on data correctness, explainability, and availability.
Responsibilities
- Own pipelines from design through production, including defining data contracts and setting/meeting freshness and quality targets.
- Partner with ML engineers on features and datasets for their models.
- Collaborate with full-stack engineers on data supporting product features.
- Design pipelines for failure, ensuring safe retries, re-run capability without data duplication, and clean recovery from bad inputs.
- Make data observable to catch problems via monitors before customers notice them.
- Manage costs effectively as data volumes grow by selecting the simplest appropriate tools.
- Help establish team data standards and shape the platform as an early data engineer.
- Build robust pipelines to ingest project data from industry-standard scheduling and planning tools, handling inconsistent files.
- Model data to preserve every update exactly as received, enabling confident comparison between any two points in time.
- Build features, training datasets, and search indexes for predictions and AI recommendations, keeping them updated with new data.
- Develop models and pipelines for customer dashboards, stakeholder reports, exports, and internal business analytics.
- Implement automated data quality checks, lineage, and access controls to ensure data accuracy, isolation, and regional compliance.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience building and running production data pipelines with end-to-end ownership.
- Proficiency in Python and advanced SQL, including writing and tuning complex queries.
- Deep data modeling experience in Postgres or a similar relational database (schema design, indexing, partitioning, migrations).
- Experience parsing and normalizing messy real-world data (large files, inconsistent formats, missing/contradictory values).
- Hands-on experience with workflow orchestration for multi-step pipelines with dependencies, retries, and backfills.
- Experience with AWS data services (S3, managed databases, streaming, serverless compute).
- A testing mindset for data, including validation, quality checks, and reproducible, idempotent pipelines.
- Clear communication skills and comfort making pragmatic trade-offs in a small team setting.
