About the Role

Fanatics Betting & Gaming (FBG) is seeking a Staff Engineer to be the technical owner of the ledger and balance services that manage customer funds across Fanatics. This role involves designing systems for a shared ledger and customer-level balance, ensuring correctness, auditability, and a smooth migration path for existing wallets. The position combines deep backend expertise with architectural leadership, setting the technical direction for the balance platform and collaborating with various internal teams.

Responsibilities

  • Own the architecture of the ledger and balance services, including data model, consistency guarantees, and interfaces for reading balances and authorizing spend.
  • Design and build distributed Java and Spring Boot services for high transaction volume with strict correctness, idempotency, and auditability.
  • Model funds by type and eligibility to enforce usage restrictions based on client, product, location, and transaction type, and to apply regulatory restrictions.
  • Lead phased migration of existing business wallets onto the shared ledger, including dual-running, reconciliation, cutover, and rollback plans to avoid customer downtime.
  • Architect event-driven integration using Java and architectural patterns for reliable balance change publication and downstream consumer dependency.
  • Incorporate responsible gaming protections into the balance model, collaborating with Responsible Gaming and Fraud teams.
  • Work with Finance, Legal, and Compliance on fund attribution, settlement, chargebacks, and data sharing across Fanatics entities.
  • Build for reconciliation and audit, including complete transaction histories, financial reporting feeds, and verification tooling.
  • Lead cross-team technical initiatives, conduct architectural reviews, design sessions, and incident postmortems.
  • Mentor engineers and improve security, observability, reliability, and testing standards.
  • Partner with product, frontend, and mobile teams to ensure clear and consistent balance behavior in customer-facing experiences.
  • Be open to occasional travel for planning, collaboration, and team development.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Deep expertise in Java and Spring Boot.
  • Experience designing and operating a ledger, wallet, balance service, or another financial system of record where correctness and auditability are requirements.
  • Strong command of transactional consistency, idempotency, concurrency control, and relational data modeling in systems that cannot lose or double-count a transaction.
  • Experience building event-driven systems and working with message streaming platforms like Kafka.
  • Demonstrated success setting technical direction and driving alignment across multiple teams.
  • Experience migrating live, high-traffic systems with minimal customer impact.
  • Ability to explain complex technical tradeoffs clearly to engineering, product, finance, and leadership audiences.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, regulated environment with changing priorities.
