About the Role
Fluent is building the next generation advertising network and is hiring its first dedicated AI Engineer to build ML/AI-powered agents and automated workflows on the Databricks lakehouse. This role involves working closely with Data Engineering, Data Science, and Solution Architecture to move AI initiatives from pilots to production, focusing on trusted data and reliable actions.
Responsibilities
- Ship production agents and automated workflows from a prioritized, business-validated backlog, owning each from scoping through deployment, monitoring, documentation, and handoff.
- Build the data foundation for workflows in Databricks, including Unity Catalog tables and views, Lakeflow pipelines, and ingestion from various systems.
- Partner with Data Science to establish measurable agent quality metrics, including evaluation sets, accuracy and drift tracking, and cost/latency instrumentation.
- Integrate with Fluent's systems via APIs, webhooks, MCP servers, and orchestration tools, replacing brittle automations with maintained, observable ones.
- Collaborate with Core Engineering to expose platform data and actions as APIs for direct use by agents and business teams.
- Build reusable components such as Claude skills, MCP connectors, prompt libraries, and playbooks.
- Handle consumer data in compliance with Fluent's privacy and security standards, using approved AI tools and working with IT & Security on credentials.
- Demo work weekly, document in Confluence, and share learnings through brown bags and tech talks.
- Utilize AI-assisted development tools like Claude Code and GitHub Copilot.
Requirements
- 3+ years of professional software or data engineering experience.
- Strong Python and SQL skills.
- Experience building and shipping at least one LLM-powered application or agent for real users, utilizing tool calling, retrieval, structured outputs, and evaluation.
- Hands-on experience with Databricks (Spark, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, Workflows) or a comparable lakehouse, or sufficient data engineering experience to ramp up quickly.
- Experience integrating SaaS and internal systems through REST APIs, webhooks, and OAuth.
- Proven ability to test work, instrument it, and manage costs.
- Comfortable running working sessions with business teams and communicating clearly with non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience using AI coding assistants as part of a modern engineering workflow.
