About the Role
This role plays a pivotal strategic part in guiding and safeguarding the organisation's technology platforms, with a specialized focus on Cryptography and Post-Quantum Readiness.
Responsibilities
- Owning and driving the organisation's Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) initiative, transition roadmap, and enterprise crypto-inventory strategy.
- Serving as the primary Cryptography SME, providing design guidance on PKI, HSMs, key lifecycle management, service mesh security, and transport layer protocols.
- Designing and architecting end-to-end security solutions for cloud-native applications, microservices, and modern core banking platforms.
- Defining, documenting, and promoting enterprise cryptographic management standards, secure secret handling, and modern cipher suites across cloud and on-premise systems.
- Performing threat modeling, secure design reviews, and technical risk assessments on new and existing platform architectures.
- Reviewing RFCs and Architectural Decision Records (ADRs) to embed security guardrails seamlessly into the software development lifecycle.
- Designing and building hands-on Proof of Concept (PoC) security solutions for engineering teams to refine and adopt.
- Mentoring software engineers on cryptographic implementations, data protection at rest and in transit, and secure development practices.
Requirements
- Proven track record in an Information Security Architect or Senior Security Engineering role designing secure, distributed systems within modern cloud environments (AWS/GCP).
- Comprehensive theoretical and practical expertise in symmetric/asymmetric cryptography, digital signatures, PKI management, Key Management Systems (KMS), and Hardware Security Modules (HSMs).
- Deep understanding of quantum computing threats to modern encryption, NIST Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) standards, hybrid key exchange, and crypto-agility strategies.
- Hands-on capability in threat modeling and secure system design across cloud-native architectures, microservices, APIs, and container platforms (Kubernetes, ECS).
- Pragmatic problem solver who views security as an engineering enabler, capable of designing robust controls that minimise developer friction.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience distilling complex cryptographic risks into clear architecture documentation (RFCs, ADRs) and guidance for technical teams and senior stakeholders.
- Right to work in the United Kingdom.
- Ability to commute to a regional UK office hub (London, Cardiff, Manchester, or Southampton) at least 1 day per week.
- Successful completion of standard financial services background and security screening.
