About the Role
Join KPMG Tax as a Disputes Manager to guide clients through disputes with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). This role involves tax litigation expertise, case management, legal research, and early legal/technical insight for cases progressing through UK courts and tribunals. You will collaborate with clients, counsel, and KPMG specialists in a growing, multidisciplinary team based in London, offering broad exposure to taxes and disputes.
Responsibilities
- Provide early legal and technical input on potential disputes with HMRC and assess associated litigation risk.
- Support litigation before the Tax Tribunals, High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, and European Court of Justice.
- Manage group litigation cases and ensure work progresses effectively.
- Prepare first drafts of pleadings, including notices of appeal and witness statements.
- Draft clear correspondence, advice, reports, and instructions to counsel.
- Undertake legal research across relevant tax and litigation matters.
- Prepare for hearings by compiling bundles of documents and authorities, attending conferences, and producing settled notes.
- Delegate appropriate work to junior colleagues and support their development.
- Build effective relationships with clients and colleagues across KPMG.
- Contribute to team and wider firm events that promote the team’s work and develop knowledge of new tax technical and legal matters.
Requirements
- Tax litigation experience, rather than solely general litigation experience, gained in a similar role within a law firm or Big Four practice.
- Experience across a range of taxes, particularly corporate and indirect taxes.
- A good understanding of procedure before the UK Tribunals.
- Experience of litigation and/or tax matters for commercial clients.
- Strong technical, drafting, organisational, and relationship-building skills.
- The ability to get up to speed quickly on tax technical matters and work collaboratively across a multidisciplinary firm.
- A proactive, analytical, and detail-focused approach, with a commitment to high-quality client service and supporting colleagues’ development.
