About the Role
St Vincent’s Health Australia is transitioning to a cloud-delivered SASE/SSE platform built on Zero Trust principles to enhance secure and reliable access for clinicians and staff. As the Network Engineer (SASE), you will engineer, implement, and operate this platform, leading the engineering workstream during implementation and owning the platform's health and performance post-launch.
Responsibilities
- Engineer and operate secure web access, ZTNA, CASB, DLP, and secure remote access services.
- Collaborate with the technical engineering workstream through implementation, migration, and handover to operations.
- Integrate SASE with SD-WAN, firewalls, identity, endpoint, and cloud platforms.
- Serve as a senior escalation point for complex secure access incidents in a 24/7 healthcare environment.
- Engineer, configure, and administer SASE/SSE capabilities, including policy, certificates, connectors, traffic forwarding, and integrations.
- Translate approved architecture into configuration standards, test plans, migration approaches, and operational acceptance criteria.
- Guide PoC, build, integration, testing, pilot, and deployment activities, and assure vendor and partner deliverables.
- Engineer resilient integration across SD-WAN, routing, IPsec/GRE tunnels, firewalls, DNS, and SSL/TLS inspection.
- Implement identity-centric access controls using Entra ID, SAML/SCIM, and device posture, and support agentless clinical, biomedical, IoT, and OT use cases.
- Lead diagnosis and resolution of complex cross-domain faults, including traffic steering, authentication, certificate pinning, asymmetric routing, and MTU issues.
- Plan and execute complex changes, upgrades, and migrations.
- Participate in the on-call roster and planned after-hours work.
- Build monitoring, automation (scripting, vendor APIs, IaC/policy-as-code), and runbooks.
- Coach engineers across Network & Communications.
Requirements
- Substantial hands-on network security engineering experience in large, complex, multi-site, high-availability environments.
- Demonstrated experience implementing, operating, and troubleshooting enterprise SASE/SSE or comparable secure access services.
- Hands-on experience with traffic forwarding methods such as endpoint agents, PAC files, and IPsec/GRE tunnels, including resilient failover.
- Strong network fundamentals across routing, WAN/SD-WAN, BGP, DNS, TCP/IP, high availability, and firewall integration.
- Advanced cross-domain troubleshooting, with experience leading recovery and root cause analysis for high-priority incidents.
- Experience producing technical designs, test plans, implementation and rollback plans, and runbooks.
- Ability to automate repeatable tasks using scripting, vendor APIs, or infrastructure-as-code.
- Clear communication with technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work autonomously in a matrix organization.
- Tertiary qualification in IT or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Experience with platforms such as Netskope, Zscaler, Cisco Secure Access, Palo Alto Prisma Access is a plus.
