About the Role

This is a full-time, on-site role in San Francisco for a People Operations leader who has built the People & Culture function from the ground up at a scaling organization. You will have ownership of people processes and systems from end to end, designing, fixing, and building a durable foundation to support significant growth. This individual-contributor role focuses on designing scalable systems rather than managing a team.

Responsibilities

  • Own the full people-ops lifecycle, from hiring and onboarding through off-boarding, building scalable systems and documentation.
  • Set up and maintain HRIS, payroll, benefits administration, and compliance recordkeeping infrastructure.
  • Establish internal policy and compliance foundation, employee handbook, leave and accommodations processes, and workplace safety and L&D programs.
  • Build the performance and development framework, including review cycles, documentation, and manager support.
  • Develop compensation best practices, including pay transparency compliance and a structured comp framework.
  • Act as the point person for employee relations and HR compliance questions, escalating as needed.
  • Partner across adjacent Ops functions (Finance, IT, general Operations) to ensure clean workflow integration.
  • Identify opportunities to scale and automate people-ops systems and workflows, including through AI tools.
  • Serve as a champion and steward of internal team culture, establishing and improving practices, traditions, and rituals.
  • Prioritize exceptionally, identifying immediate needs versus those that can wait for more headcount.

Requirements

  • Prior experience building or substantially improving, and then leading, people operations processes and systems at a scaling organization, ideally a startup or fast-growing nonprofit.
  • Demonstrated ability to design systems from scratch.
  • Strong understanding of core HR/people-ops fundamentals across the full lifecycle.
  • Comfortable operating as an individual contributor with high autonomy.
  • Excellent judgment on prioritization.
  • Track record of scaling and automating people-ops workflows, ideally including use of AI tools.
  • Strong written communication skills; able to turn ambiguous questions into clear systems, policy, and documentation.
  • Able to move at the pace of a fast-scaling, well-funded, early-stage company.
  • Genuine interest in AI safety and CAIS's mission.
