About the Role
Royal Bank of Canada seeks an experienced technology leader to oversee the global engineering function for our Multi-Asset Agency Solutions platform. You will direct a team of 30+ engineers and QA professionals responsible for developing, maintaining, and enhancing mission-critical trading technologies that power equities, futures, rates, and FX algorithmic trading engines, smart order routing, order management systems, and flow internalization infrastructure. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with strategic leadership, requiring you to bridge the gap between engineering teams and senior business stakeholders while driving innovation across our trading technology stack.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic direction and day-to-day leadership for all technical aspects of our multi-asset trading platform, ensuring robust performance, scalability, and reliability of systems handling billions in daily trading volume.
- Oversee the architecture and optimization of core trading engines across asset classes, manage the smart order router and order management systems that serve as the backbone of our execution capabilities, and lead initiatives around flow internalization and market microstructure innovation.
- Direct platform engineering efforts, system performance tuning, and infrastructure modernization to support rapid business evolution.
- Lead the architecture and buildout of a new low-latency electronic trading technology platform engineered to service our prime brokerage client base. This greenfield initiative demands deep expertise in systems optimization, network architecture, and ultra-low-latency design patterns.
- Drive decisions around technology selection, infrastructure design, and API standardization to deliver a competitive advantage in the prime brokerage market while meeting the demanding performance and reliability expectations of sophisticated hedge funds and trading firms. This platform will represent a strategic asset for RBC's growth in the systematic and algorithmic trading segments.
- Hire, mentor, and develop engineering talent. Set technical standards and best practices and foster a culture of operational excellence and continuous improvement.
- Serve as the primary technical advisor to senior business leaders including the Head of Systematic Trading, Head of Multi-Asset Agency Solutions, and other executive stakeholders, translating business requirements into technical roadmaps, and ensuring alignment between technology investments and business objectives.
- Partner closely with risk, compliance, and operations teams to ensure all systems meet regulatory requirements and operational standards.
Requirements
- 10+ years of hands-on software development experience with demonstrated mastery in Java or C++ in Linux environments.
- Proficiency with kdb and the ability to optimize high-frequency, data-intensive systems.
- Progression from individual contributor to technical leadership, with proven ability to architect large-scale, distributed trading systems and mentor senior engineers. Your experience should include designing or optimizing trading technologies such as algorithmic trading engines, execution systems, or market data infrastructure at a major financial institution.
- Knowledge of North American and European trading markets, including market structure, connectivity, and trading conventions across major exchanges and venues. You should be familiar with relevant regulatory regimes including MiFID II, market abuse regulations, and data protection requirements, with demonstrated experience navigating compliance frameworks in highly regulated environments.
- Strong understanding of risk management principles, position monitoring, and control systems as they apply to multi-asset trading is essential. You should have supported North American and European trading operations, giving you practical familiarity with the regulatory expectations and operational requirements of trading businesses operating under both oversights.
- Ability to combine strong technical depth with genuine business acumen, understanding market microstructure, execution quality metrics, and how technology decisions impact trading performance and profitability.
- Experience managing and scaling engineering teams of significant size.
- Experience with real-time systems, low-latency optimization, and DevOps practices.
