About the Role

The Applied AI Solutions Specialist collaborates with AEC project teams to identify and implement practical AI solutions that enhance project delivery. This role involves understanding current workflows, transforming them into AI-enabled processes, and selecting the most appropriate AI approach, from existing tools to custom development. The specialist will prototype solutions using project information, support adoption, and work with the Solution Delivery team to scale successful implementations. This role supports the Mott MacDonald North America region and reports to the AI and Information Leader.

Responsibilities

  • Identify opportunities where AI can improve quality, efficiency, consistency, or access to information by understanding current workflows and challenges.
  • Assess AI appropriateness and select the simplest viable approach, prioritizing existing capabilities over unnecessary custom development.
  • Redesign existing project and discipline processes into AI-enabled workflows by integrating AI, automation, engineering technologies, project information, and human expertise.
  • Build, test, and iterate AI solutions with end-users, moving from ambiguous problems to working prototypes that demonstrate feasibility and value.
  • Work with diverse AEC information, including drawings, BIM/CAD models, specifications, and spatial data.
  • Determine the optimal technology mix, including AI, deterministic logic, automation, APIs, and conventional development, for end-to-end workflows.
  • Adapt prototypes to project-specific needs and support adoption through demonstrations, user testing, and feedback.
  • Validate AI outputs with subject-matter experts, understand limitations, and establish traceability and assurance.
  • Transition proven solutions to the Solution Delivery team, providing necessary documentation and knowledge for scaling.
  • Capture reusable technical approaches and lessons learned, and evaluate emerging AI technologies for AEC delivery.

Requirements

  • Experience in architecture, engineering, construction, or major infrastructure delivery with a practical understanding of project design and delivery.
  • Strong understanding of design and/or construction workflows and project information usage.
  • Practical knowledge of AEC systems, including CAD/BIM, CDEs, document management, GIS/spatial, and other project information systems.
  • Experience with AEC information formats such as drawings, BIM/CAD models, specifications, and structured project data.
  • Hands-on experience building AI solutions using Python, AI APIs, SDKs, and modern frameworks.
  • Experience applying Generative AI and LLMs to real technical or engineering problems.
  • Strong rapid-prototyping capability, independently moving from problem to proof of concept.
  • Ability to integrate AI with project information, APIs, automation, and existing applications.
  • Ability to select the appropriate AI approach and recognize when AI is not the right solution.
  • Understanding of AI evaluation metrics and the role of human validation.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with project teams to understand workflows, co-develop solutions, and support adoption.
  • Ability to translate between AEC practitioners and technical teams.
  • Clear communication of technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Curiosity and ability to quickly learn new technologies and engineering domains.
