About the Role
As TLM of the ML Datasets Platform, you will define the APIs, tooling, and storage formats that make datasets a shared, first-class asset at Waabi, ensuring they are versioned, efficiently updatable, fully traceable, and fast to load across GPU workloads. The technical challenge involves finding the right abstractions to allow ML teams to integrate with the platform without a one-size-fits-all approach or building their own data infrastructure. You will act as a hands-on technical leader, growing and managing the team, setting the roadmap, and collaborating with the ML Training Platform and ML development teams.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow the ML Dataset Platform team as both its technical lead and people manager, setting technical direction, defining the roadmap, hiring, and mentoring engineers.
- Define APIs, tools, and storage formats for Waabi's ML datasets, balancing reuse against specific training workload needs.
- Build tooling for large-scale dataset management, including versioning and efficient incremental updates.
- Design APIs for training-time transformations, bridging ETL and dynamic transformations within data loaders.
- Own common dataloading tools, providing observability into bottlenecks and training job throughput.
- Streamline data access for multi-cloud training, ensuring predictable cost and latency.
- Automate data lineage as a first-class property of every dataset.
- Partner with the ML Training Platform team on data and training infrastructure boundaries.
- Partner with ML development teams on transitioning shared-dataset tooling.
- Drive adoption by migrating training data and incorporating learnings into the team's roadmap.
Requirements
- Deep ML dataset experience: designed and built large-scale data infrastructure for ML training (storage formats, dataset versioning, ETL, dataloading).
- Understanding of performance characteristics of petabyte-scale sensor or multimodal data.
- Strong software engineering and implementation skills.
- Very strong Python skills.
- Comfortable in PyTorch training loops.
- Strong software-engineering fundamentals.
- Experience with distributed systems, cloud storage, and data processing frameworks (e.g., Spark, Ray, Beam).
- Proven technical leadership: led a platform or infrastructure effort used by multiple teams, defined its APIs, and driven adoption.
- People leadership: managed or tech-led a team of engineers, including hiring and mentoring.
- Ability to balance hands-on technical contribution with roadmap ownership and stakeholder management.
- Team player: clear communication with researchers and engineers, consensus building, and delivery in a fast-paced environment.
