About the Role

The Release Engineer is the senior practitioner and standards-setter for Meridian’s Release Engineering function, owning build and code management and operating development and QA environments to pre-production standard. The role directs the day-to-day work of contingent release engineers, converts ticket-based environment support into self-service, and applies sound independent judgment on build and environment problems.

Responsibilities

  • Own and operate Meridian’s branching and merge strategy across the delivery estate; govern repository structure, protection rules, and code custody standards
  • Engineer reproducible builds: artifact and package versioning (Azure Artifacts, NuGet, npm), software dependency management, and secure build configuration
  • Maintain the build knowledge base and runbooks to audit-ready standard
  • Implement and operate Dev and QA environments following CI/CD standard
  • Meet environment parity and promotion criteria by construction; remediate drift findings before they reach the readiness gate
  • Convert recurring environment requests into self-service; measure and report the manual effort retired each quarter
  • Maintain release-build pipelines for assigned estates within the shared pipeline templates; support release execution to Release & Service Governance’s gates
  • Provide build and environment support during critical release windows as scheduled
  • Lead improvement initiatives across build and environment practice; pilot tooling with Platform Engineering and produce structured findings for the Sr. Manager
  • Maintain the function’s standards — branching, versioning, environment usage — and keep them current as the estate modernizes
  • Track adoption and propose retirement of legacy build tooling in line with published timelines
  • Coordinate with Platform & Engineering Services (SRE) for dependencies touching pre-production, and with vendors for tooling support
  • Serve as the escalation point for build and environment issues in Dev and QA

Requirements

  • Confronts novel build and environment problems where no established pattern exists; independently constructs resolution approaches and documents them as standards for contingent engineers to follow
  • Sets build and environment standards within the Sr. Manager’s functional direction; exercises independent judgment on daily operations, contingent-engineer direction, and standard-setting decisions
  • Escalates to the Sr. Manager for decisions involving tooling investment, changes to platform boundaries with Platform Engineering, or significant departures from Release & Service Governance policy
  • Directly accountable for build integrity, Dev/QA environment availability and parity, and the quality of contingent release-engineer output across the delivery estate
  • Standards and procedures set by this role govern how all development teams manage code, builds, and environments; inconsistency or poor design at this level propagates across the full estate
  • Accountable for the onboarding, task quality, and knowledge capture of contingent release engineers; makes each seat’s knowledge transferable and each decision documented
  • Communicates build and environment standards clearly to engineers and reports progress and improvement metrics to the Sr. Manager in plain terms
  • Collaborative with peer functions — Platform Engineering, Release Governance, and SRE — earns influence through technical credibility and well-documented evidence rather than positional authority
  • Self-motivated and reliable; manages own workload across standards-setting, environment operations, and improvement work without requiring close supervision
  • Embedding & leveraging technology – Confidence and willingness to learn and integrate AI and emerging technologies into new ways of working. Experience with low/no code tools like the Microsoft Power Platform and generative AI productivity tools like Microsoft Copilot is considered an asset
  • Critical Thinking – The ability to analyze, evaluate and interpret information from various sources and apply logic and problem solving to make decisions.
  • Data Driven– Leverage data and insights to identify, prioritize and improve member experience and business efficiency.
  • Curiosity & Flexibility – Comfortable navigating and embracing change and uncertainty, ask more questions, explore more options. Continuously learn and grow.
