About the Role
Growth teams are central to Lyft's products and decision-making, driving business growth. This role involves building systems that empower users (Drivers and Riders) by making them more predictive, personalized, and adaptive. The ideal candidate will build and own innovative applications, solve problems with distributed computing, and thrive in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement backend features end-to-end with clear ownership, delivering well-scoped work from technical design through to production with moderate guidance from senior engineers
- Write clean, reliable, well-tested code that meets team standards and holds up in code review
- Participate actively in code reviews, giving specific and constructive feedback while continuing to develop your own review instincts
- Debug and resolve issues across backend services including performance bottlenecks, reliability problems, and data integrity issues
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and partner engineering teams to clarify requirements and surface technical constraints early
- Contribute to technical discussions and help evaluate implementation approaches for new features
- Write unit and integration tests for your own code and develop familiarity with the team's broader testing and observability practices
- Address technical debt and make incremental improvements to existing services as part of regular development work
- Participate in on-call rotations, respond to production incidents, and support teammates in mitigating customer-impacting events
- Communicate progress, blockers, and tradeoffs clearly within the team
Requirements
- 3–5 years of software engineering experience with a history of designing & shipping backend features in production environments
- BS/MS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Strong proficiency in one or more backend languages (Go, Python, Java, or similar); experience with Python is a plus, with a solid understanding of performance and reliability fundamentals
- Solid working knowledge of distributed systems concepts — microservices, REST and/or gRPC APIs, message queues, and async processing patterns
- Familiarity with relational and NoSQL databases, including data modeling, querying, and basic indexing and performance considerations
- Experience with observability tooling — logging, metrics, and alerting — and a developing instinct for how to make systems debuggable in production
- Comfortable working with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or similar) at a feature level, with a growing understanding of how services are deployed and operated
- Experience writing and maintaining unit and integration tests with a focus on reliability and regression prevention
- Familiarity with Git workflows, code review processes, and CI/CD pipelines
- Ability to scope and break down moderately complex tasks independently
- Good communication skills and a collaborative approach to problem-solving
- Experience with machine learning and building LLM applications (Nice to have)
- Proficiency in AI tools (Nice to have)
