About the Role

As a Senior People Partner (HRBP) for Tech, you will be the trusted advisor to our technical leaders on everything that involves people: how teams are organized, how engineers grow, how performance is managed, and how we keep our best builders as we scale. You will partner directly with our CTO, engineering and product leaders, and managers across our R&D organization, and you will help set the standard for how People Partners work at Assort. You will report to the SVP of People and work closely with People Operations and Recruiting. This is a builder's seat, helping us grow from ~300 to over 1,000 people in the coming years. You have seen what an engineering organization looks like at each stage of that climb, and you know what has to change before it breaks. You will build this function ahead of the curve.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with technical leaders on org design and planning, including team structures, spans of control, headcount planning, and navigating reorgs, new manager transitions, and leadership changes.
  • Own leveling, performance, and promotion for R&D, including calibrations, 9-box reviews, promotion decisions, and compensation recommendations.
  • Build and maintain career ladders across IC and management tracks.
  • Partner with Recruiting and leaders on engineering hiring strategy, offer competitiveness, and equity philosophy.
  • Make People Partnering AI-native by using AI to prepare for leader conversations, analyze org health data, draft documentation, and remove manual work.
  • Own employee relations, including handling investigations, complaints, and sensitive situations with fairness, discretion, and sound judgment.
  • Partner with Legal when necessary for employee relations matters.
  • Spot patterns in employee relations issues and fix root causes.
  • Coach engineering and product managers on feedback, difficult conversations, team dynamics, and underperformance.
  • Feed learnings back to People Operations to ensure programs address real needs.
  • Drive retention and org health by tracking sentiment, attrition, and burnout signals.
  • Run stay conversations with high performers.
  • Provide leadership with clear, data-backed recommendations for retention and org health.

Requirements

  • 5+ years in People Partner or HR Business Partner (HRBP) roles supporting engineering and product.
  • Leadership experience, including advising CTOs and VPs of Engineering, and leading or mentoring other partners.
  • Hypergrowth experience at a technology company, ideally during a period of scaling from roughly 250 to 1,000+ employees.
  • Credibility with technical leaders, understanding of engineering team dynamics, leveling, IC versus manager paths, and technical work evaluation.
  • Experience building or running engineering career ladders, calibrations, and promotion processes.
  • Experience making difficult decisions with incomplete information.
  • Knowledge of technical compensation, including equity-heavy offers and competing for engineering talent.
  • Experience running investigations and resolving complex employee relations situations.
  • AI fluency and experience using AI in daily work.
  • A proactive approach to building functions ahead of the curve.
