About the Role

The Infrastructure team owns the reliability and performance of the platform behind every Current product. As a Staff engineer with a backend focus, you will own infrastructure domains that span several squads and work closely with frontend and backend engineers across the company. You will set technical direction and lead the work that keeps the platform fast, resilient and secure. This is a senior individual contributor role that has a salary range of $215,000 - $295,000. You will have broad influence across engineering without managing a team.

Responsibilities

  • Own the stability and performance of core services and data stores, a domain that spans several squads
  • Lead regional resilience work, including multi-region operation and failover
  • Lead application performance work with frontend and backend engineers: find bottlenecks across services, data stores and the network, and fix them
  • Plan and run service and database migrations with zero downtime
  • Own the reliability and performance of data pipelines that move production data between services and data stores
  • Improve shared tooling engineers use to build, deploy and operate services, including agentic tooling that makes this work faster and safer
  • Lead response to infrastructure incidents and make sure postmortem actions get done
  • Set technical direction through design reviews and explain tradeoffs clearly to engineers, product partners and leadership
  • Raise the quality of other engineers' work through design review, pairing and mentoring
  • Partner with Security and Compliance to meet the standards of a regulated financial services company

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software or infrastructure engineering with a backend focus, including at least 3 years owning production infrastructure that multiple teams depend on
  • Experience leading regional resilience projects (multi-region, failover or disaster recovery) and application performance projects in production
  • Experience building and running Java backend services and comfort working in Java services and shared libraries
  • Experience with MongoDB in production at scale: performance tuning, indexing, replication, capacity planning and upgrades
  • Experience with cloud operations on Kubernetes: running production clusters, upgrades, autoscaling and multi-cluster setups
  • Experience deploying Infrastructure as code, ideally Terraform
  • Experience using observability tools (Datadog) for metrics, tracing, logging and alerting, and using them to lead incident response
  • Experience building or operating data pipelines that move production data
  • Hands-on experience with agentic tooling, such as AI coding agents or MCP servers
  • Strong communication skills. Ability to write clear RFCs and lead cross-team decisions through influence rather than authority
