About the Role

We’re looking for a Principal Designer to set the visual direction and identity for DoorDash’s merchant products, including DashOS software. You will own the visual direction for agentic experiences, point-of-sale, handheld, tablet, mobile, and web products, ensuring merchants love using them and have a recognizable identity across all surfaces. This role emphasizes visual craft, utilizing code and AI tools for prototyping and UI refinement, and defining the visual foundation of the design system.

Responsibilities

  • Set the visual direction for merchant products across DashOS and align multiple teams around a shared vision.
  • Ship high-craft interfaces, transforming complex, data-dense workflows into easily readable screens for busy kitchen or counter environments.
  • Own the visual foundation of the design system, defining tokens, components, and usage rules for both human and AI tools.
  • Review generated UI against the established bar, document best practices, and improve the system based on actual usage.
  • Design visual systems for new surfaces like points-of-sale and handheld devices where existing paradigms do not apply.
  • Influence through prototypes and shipped products, ensuring prototypes are production-ready.
  • Mentor senior designers, assist in hiring, and help refine the team's focus on building impactful solutions.

Requirements

  • Designed interfaces that defined or reshaped a product’s look and feel, with a portfolio showcasing top-tier visual craft across various brands and styles.
  • Proficiency in building designs using React, TypeScript, or similar languages.
  • Experience using AI tools to accelerate design exploration and UI refinement.
  • Proven ability to set direction across a product area and gain adoption through the quality of work.
  • Experience building visual systems that enhance speed and consistency for multiple designers.
  • Experience with complex, information-dense products such as point-of-sale, fintech, marketplaces, or platform teams.
  • Experience shipping products in collaboration with product and engineering partners, including constructive pushback.
  • Bonus: Experience designing for devices or contexts without existing design paradigms and building the visual system from scratch.
