About the Role
The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for developing and delivering mechanical engineering designs, drawings, specifications, and calculations across all phases of a project, from initial concept through construction and final completion. This role applies advanced mechanical engineering knowledge, independent technical judgment, and a thorough understanding of applicable codes and industry standards to develop safe, efficient, and constructible mechanical systems. The Senior Mechanical Engineer collaborates with project managers, multidisciplinary engineering teams, contractors, and clients to ensure mechanical designs meet project requirements, quality expectations, budgets, and schedules. This position also leads assigned construction administration activities, resolves technical challenges, evaluates project risks, and supports successful project execution with limited supervision.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development and production of mechanical engineering drawings, specifications, and calculations throughout all phases of design, including conceptual design, design development, and construction documentation.
- Design and evaluate mechanical systems, including HVAC, piping, hydronic, and mechanical equipment systems, ensuring compliance with applicable building codes, engineering standards, and project specifications.
- Review mechanical engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, quality, completeness, and coordination with architectural, structural, electrical, and other project disciplines.
- Utilize CAD and 3D modeling software to develop, review, and coordinate mechanical drawings and models, identifying potential design conflicts and constructability issues.
- Lead construction administration activities, including reviewing shop drawings and submittals, responding to Requests for Information (RFIs), evaluating proposed design changes, and conducting field visits.
- Coordinate with project managers, contractors, clients, and multidisciplinary teams to resolve design discrepancies, address field conditions, and maintain alignment between engineering documents and construction activities.
- Support project management efforts through mechanical scope development, cost tracking, schedule coordination, and technical risk assessment.
- Apply independent engineering judgment to troubleshoot complex mechanical design and construction issues and recommend practical, code-compliant solutions.
- Support quality assurance and quality control efforts by reviewing engineering documents and verifying that completed work aligns with approved designs and project requirements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, technical standards, design processes, and professional development within the engineering team.
Requirements
- Minimum of 6 years of professional mechanical engineering experience.
- Demonstrated experience developing mechanical designs, engineering drawings, specifications, and calculations.
- Working knowledge of HVAC, piping, hydronic, and mechanical equipment systems.
- Experience with construction administration, technical coordination, shop drawing reviews, RFIs, and field evaluations.
- Proficiency with CAD and 3D mechanical modeling tools.
- Strong understanding of applicable mechanical codes, engineering standards, and design practices.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- NCEES Record preferred for professional licensure maintenance and credential documentation.
