About the Role
The Data Center Engineering team is responsible for the physical design of data centers, focusing on complex topics like power usage and environmentally-friendly facilities. This role involves optimizing for efficiencies, driving improvements, generating ideas, communicating recommendations to senior-level executives, and overseeing implementation. The multidisciplinary engineering team provides support in the design, construction, and operation of Google's data centers. As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will drive engineering outcomes for mission-critical complex third-party development, leased, and colocation data center sites across the APAC region. You will act as the primary technical authority, ensuring complex power infrastructure is built safely and correctly. Responsibilities include evaluating new facility opportunities, supporting infrastructure expansion and retrofit projects, optimizing colocation deployments, and ensuring critical infrastructure is delivered safely, reliably, and efficiently. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, lead technical assessments, and mentor other engineers. The AI and Infrastructure team is redefining what's possible by delivering AI and Infrastructure at unparalleled scale, efficiency, reliability, and velocity, empowering Google customers with breakthrough capabilities and insights.
Responsibilities
- Lead technical due diligence assessments for potential new leased and colocation data center facilities across APAC, focusing on the entire electrical system including utility, HV, MV and LV to the racks.
- Conduct comprehensive design document reviews (basis of design, detailed electrical drawings, and single-line diagrams) submitted by external A/E or colocation partners.
- Lead the field-side RFI process, identifying potential spatial or electrical conflicts and providing immediate engineering solutions to avoid rework.
- Serve as the APAC electrical engineering authority for design, engineering and field issues in leased and colocation data center projects.
- Review and approve equipment submittals, electrical studies (e.g., short-circuit, arc-flash, protection coordination, power modeling), and transient stability analyses.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 10 years of experience in mission critical facility design and construction environments.
- Experience in electrical infrastructure.
- Experience in high/medium/low-voltage (HV/MV/LV) systems including utility grid interfaces, site substation, standby generators, transformers, switchgears, UPS systems and distribution networks.
- Ability to travel up to 25% of the time across APAC countries as required.
- Experience in estimation, electrical design, operation, and commissioning of substations, switchgear, ATP/ATS, emergency power systems and their control systems, power monitoring, and electrical protection.
- Experience with medium voltage systems.
- Experience in design, construction, and commissioning of high voltage substations, medium or low voltage electrical distribution systems, AC/DC systems, and associated power management or SCADA tools.
- Experience with cross-discipline teams (e.g., structural, civil, IT/Telecom).
- Experience working with data center equipment and environments, with a strong understanding of start up/commissioning processes.
