About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer with proven geospatial expertise to join our Location Services team. You will design, build, and maintain scalable, reliable, high-performance location-based services and geospatial capabilities that power critical workflows across Cotality. The Senior Software Engineer operates with strong technical autonomy within the team and owns complex geospatial features and services from conception through to production.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable, low-latency, and highly available backend services within the Location Services platform.
  • Lead the component-level design of new geospatial features and APIs, and contribute to broader architectural discussions.
  • Apply geospatial expertise to data modeling, spatial indexing, querying, and processing, writing clean, maintainable, well-tested code.
  • Evaluate and adopt modern tools, libraries, and patterns that improve team productivity and service performance.
  • Own the end-to-end delivery of key geospatial components, features, and microservices, from technical specification to production deployment.
  • Break down complex requirements into well-scoped engineering tasks, estimating effort and managing technical risks.
  • Ensure solutions meet strict standards for performance, location accuracy, data quality, reliability, and security.
  • Contribute to team roadmap planning by providing technical feasibility assessments and constructive feedback.
  • Partner with product managers, data engineers, and infrastructure teams to deliver cohesive location-based capabilities.
  • Support partner engineering teams integrating with Location Services APIs through clear documentation and technical guidance.
  • Help resolve cross-service integration challenges to ensure smooth end-to-end system behavior.
  • Implement robust observability, monitoring, and alerting to maintain high availability and fault tolerance across geospatial services.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, troubleshoot production issues, and conduct root-cause analyses to drive lasting preventative fixes.
  • Champion automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and reliability engineering practices within the team.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through pairing, design discussions, and constructive code reviews, and share geospatial best practices.
  • Uphold high standards for engineering rigor, system documentation, and operational readiness.
  • Promote a collaborative, pragmatic engineering culture focused on continuous improvement and customer impact.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong track record of delivering production backend systems.
  • Demonstrated hands-on geospatial experience.
  • Prior experience building or working on location-based services, mapping platforms, or spatial data pipelines in a production environment.
  • Hands-on experience designing and building scalable distributed systems and RESTful/gRPC APIs.
  • Strong proficiency in one or more backend programming languages (e.g., Java, C++, Python, or Go).
  • Experience building and deploying cloud-native applications (e.g., GCP, AWS, or Azure).
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with real-time or near-real-time location processing pipelines.
  • Familiarity with geospatial tooling and standards (e.g., GDAL, GeoServer, OGC standards, GeoJSON).
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with asynchronous messaging and data streaming (e.g., Kafka, Pub/Sub).
  • Experience with performance tuning, load testing, and reliability engineering.
