About the Role
Financial Engineering (FinEng) builds the financial systems behind OpenAI’s products, including ChatGPT, Codex, and the API platform. These systems handle purchasing, payments, subscriptions, billing, product catalogs, and usage metering, supporting individual users to large enterprises. Your work will directly impact product launches, customer confidence, and the evolution of OpenAI's offerings.
Responsibilities
- Design and build systems for purchasing, payments, subscriptions, and billing across OpenAI products and global markets.
- Build product catalogs, SKUs, and bundles to enable new product offerings and packaging.
- Develop workspace and entitlement systems connecting purchases to product access.
- Ensure correctness of charges and product access during retries, late updates, or service failures.
- Build metering systems, data pipelines, and APIs for usage-to-billing conversion, spending information, and traceable records.
- Create reusable components for product teams to launch new offerings, pricing, and payment options.
- Simplify complex financial workflows for customers and internal teams, using feedback and experiments.
- Scale and evolve live systems while ensuring customer access, financial accuracy, performance, and security.
- Own problems from design through launch and operation, collaborating with product, design, finance, and engineering teams.
Requirements
- Staff+ engineers with strong backend experience.
- Experience with payments, subscriptions, pricing, billing, or other systems that manage customer purchases and revenue.
- Experience with product catalogs, packaging and bundles, workspace management, entitlements, or usage metering.
- Experience building financial or transaction systems at scale, checking that records match across systems, or supporting compliance and audits.
