About the Role

Float is building an agent that functions as a chief financial officer for every Canadian business. You will join a small team to build the foundation for this agent, with a blank slate and direct input to product teams. This role offers a unique opportunity to apply frontier AI to real finance problems, transforming raw model intelligence into scalable products. You will build the core components that enable agents to act reliably in production and the interfaces through which customers interact with them, then scale these across Float's products. The field is rapidly evolving, requiring fast learning and a willingness to rebuild when better approaches emerge. This is a zero-to-one position focused on building the foundational harness for all agents at Float, including context management, capabilities, tool use, evaluations, observability, and distribution channels.

Responsibilities

  • Ship agents that save customers real money and time, taking them from prototype to production at scale and owning the outcome.
  • Build the unified harness, including context management, capabilities, tool use, evaluation, monitoring, and observability.
  • Ensure agent actions are safe to trust with company finances through permissions, approvals, audit trails, and clear behavior.
  • Define and measure success through offline evaluations, production monitoring, and an incident-to-improvement loop.
  • Build the interfaces through which agents are delivered, including chat, generative UI, and multiple channels.
  • Make product teams faster by enabling them to launch agent capabilities on the harness without rebuilding it.
  • Stay on the frontier by tracking models, inference, and context management, and reworking built components when better approaches appear.
  • Build the approval and audit layer for agents to pay bills on behalf of customers.
  • Stand up the evaluation framework to assess agent accuracy on company spend.
  • Provide agents with comprehensive business context (cards, bills, accounts, integrations) accurately and efficiently.
  • Ship tooling that allows product teams to launch agentic capabilities independently.
  • Act as a technical leader, setting patterns for harness construction and establishing evaluation and observability standards for all agents.

Requirements

  • Experience building and shipping agents or LLM-backed systems to production, including monitoring, improvement, and scaling.
  • Typically 5+ years of software engineering experience for Senior roles, 8+ for Staff roles.
  • Track record of technical leadership across teams for Staff roles.
  • Depth in either full-stack product engineering for agentic experiences or backend engineering for LLM pipelines and agent infrastructure.
  • Hands-on, current knowledge of frontier models, inference, and context management, with informed opinions on effective approaches.
  • Comfort giving agents capabilities and context and observing their behavior rather than specifying every step.
  • Experience at multiple company stages or in a rapidly growing company with significant ownership and impact.
  • A habit of building and finishing projects proactively, even if not explicitly requested.
  • Curiosity and willingness to adapt and rebuild as the field evolves.
  • Experience as a founder, founding engineer, or early engineer on a major initiative.
  • Experience building systems that move money or make critical decisions, such as in fintech, payments, or other regulated products.
  • Experience designing evaluation frameworks for LLM systems, including LLM-as-judge and human-in-the-loop labeling.
