About the Role

The Mold and Tool Machinist is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and improving injection molds, spending most of the day at the bench and machines.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mold problems (wear, flash, damaged cores and cavities, ejection, cooling and venting) and carry out repairs, escalating complex issues.
  • Repair and modify multi-cavity injection molds through machining, grinding and polishing, and coordinating outside welding when necessary.
  • Sustain a preventive maintenance program for every mold, with a repair history for each tool.
  • Act on work orders from the Manufacturing and Engineering teams, confirm the root cause, and support mold qualification after repairs.
  • Manage spare components and steel so critical molds are never down for lack of a part.
  • Support outside mold shops on new molds and major rebuilds: inspect on delivery and assist with first trials.
  • Keep the tool room safe, organized and clean.

Requirements

  • 3+ years as a mold machinist or toolmaker on plastic injection molds (5+ preferred).
  • Hands-on skill on manual and CNC mills, lathes, and surface grinders.
  • Ability to read and work from mold drawings with GD&T, and to measure precisely.
  • Enough understanding of molding on the press to tell a mold problem from a process problem.

Skills

  • Journeyman card or completed apprenticeship preferred.
  • Experience with multi-cavity, tight-tolerance molds and hot runner systems.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks or a similar CAD system.
  • CNC programming (CAM).
  • Experience in a small shop handling everything from repairs to vendor management.
