About the Role
The Finance Manager, R&D and Innovation serves as a key finance business partner supporting Global R&D, Product Development, and Innovation teams. This role has primary responsibility for gross margin and margin-accretion analysis, product profitability evaluation, and financial assessment of new product development initiatives. The position develops business cases for new product launches and line extensions, supports innovation pipeline evaluation and stage-gate decision making, and provides commercial modeling that incorporates market-share and category-growth assumptions. The role also quantifies the financial benefits of formula harmonization and complexity-reduction initiatives, helping balance growth opportunities with margin, productivity, and profitability objectives. Working closely with R&D, Marketing, Supply Chain, Operations, and Brand Finance teams, the Finance Manager delivers actionable insights that support successful innovation investments and commercialization strategies. In addition, the Finance Manager will support financial planning and reporting activities for the R&D and Innovation organization, including budgeting, forecasting, month-end analysis, and management reporting.
Responsibilities
- Lead gross margin analysis, and product profitability assessments for innovation and new product development initiatives.
- Assess margin accretion and dilution for new products and line extensions, including mix, pricing, cost, cannibalization, and portfolio impacts.
- Quantify complexity-reduction benefits across formulas, ingredients, packaging components, SKUs, and manufacturing processes, including savings, working-capital, and service-level implications.
- Evaluate formula harmonization opportunities and develop financial scenarios that balance cost savings, product performance, regulatory requirements, and commercialization risk.
- Build robust business cases for new product launches, including revenue forecasts, investment requirements, ROI analysis, payback modeling, and margin assessments.
- Estimate market share, category growth, distribution, velocity, pricing, and cannibalization for line extensions and new products; translate commercial assumptions into revenue, gross margin, and cash-flow scenarios.
- Perform pre-launch and post-launch financial assessments, including readiness, launch investment, volume and margin delivery, forecast accuracy, line trials expense, new product capital investment, and corrective-action recommendations.
- Develop financial models supporting innovation pipeline evaluation, portfolio prioritization, and long-range growth planning.
- Manage the financial workstream within the innovation stage-gate process, establishing financial deliverables and decision criteria, validating assumptions, identifying risks and opportunities, and providing clear go, hold, revise, or stop recommendations.
- Partner with R&D, Product Development, Marketing, and Supply Chain teams to evaluate commercialization opportunities and investment trade-offs.
- Analyze post-launch performance against business case expectations and recommend actions to improve future innovation returns.
- Support Design-to-Value, formulation, packaging, and productivity initiatives through financial analysis and profitability assessments.
- Prepare executive-ready reporting, presentations, and recommendations for senior leadership.
- Manage the annual budget, quarterly forecasts, and monthly spending analysis for the R&D and Innovation organization.
- Prepare month-end reporting, analyze actual results versus budget and forecast, and provide actionable recommendations to business partners.
- Partner with functional leaders to identify spending risks and opportunities and ensure accurate financial projections.
- Support long-range planning activities and resource allocation decisions for R&D and Innovation investments.
- Drive forecasting, budgeting, month-end reporting, and variance analysis for supported functions.
