About the Role
Standard Bots is seeking a Functional Safety Engineer, open to Senior, Staff, or Principal levels, with the potential to lead the safety organization. This role is crucial for ensuring our AI-native industrial robots are safe by design, allowing customers to deploy them without cages or extensive integration. You will be responsible for proving the safety of our robots, making safety a core feature known throughout the industry, and building a robust safety team.
Responsibilities
- Own the safety case across all products, including analysis, architecture, and certification plans.
- Serve as the technical liaison with third-party assessors (notified bodies and NRTLs).
- Conduct hands-on verification of safety functions on real robots, including fault injection testing.
- Hire and lead a team of functional safety engineers.
- Integrate safety into the design process from the initial concept stage, reporting to the Head of System Architecture.
- Collaborate daily with hardware, embedded firmware, and test teams.
Requirements
- Experience taking collaborative robots or similarly complex machinery through third-party safety assessment.
- Proficiency in ISO 10218-1 and -2, ISO 13849-1 and -2, ISO 12100, and IEC 61508.
- Ability to read and critically evaluate schematics and firmware architectures.
- Familiarity with safety analysis tools such as FMEA, FTA, HAZOP, STPA, and SISTEMA.
- Preference for hands-on work on the test floor over document reviews.
- Understanding of both standard requirements and practical safety measures.
- Experience leading or mentoring safety engineers, or readiness to build a team.
- Experience working on the assessor side at a notified body or NRTL (nice to have).
- Knowledge of mobile manipulators and AMRs, including ANSI/RIA R15.08 and ISO 3691-4 (nice to have).
- Experience building or specifying safety controllers (nice to have).
- Experience in a startup environment (nice to have).
