About the Role
ClinSurge Research is seeking a Director of Finance / Controller to manage finance operations across all its clinical research sites. This role involves ensuring accurate bookkeeping, timely invoicing to sponsors and CROs, and providing financial insights for strategic decision-making. The position starts with hands-on responsibilities and will evolve as the team expands.
Responsibilities
- Lead monthly and year-end close processes for all sites and entities.
- Oversee sponsor and CRO invoicing, including start-up fees, screen-fail payments, and other invoiceable items.
- Track study budgets, payment schedules, and profitability by protocol and site.
- Review Clinical Trial Agreements (CTAs) and budget exhibits for financial terms and risks, and assist with pricing and negotiations.
- Develop cash flow forecasts, annual budgets, and financial models.
- Manage HST/GST, payroll compliance, corporate tax, and external audits.
- Maintain internal controls, financial Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and approval workflows.
- Supervise Finance and Administration Coordinator and bookkeeping support, with plans to hire additional staff.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA designation.
- 7+ years of progressive finance or accounting experience.
- 3+ years in a controller or equivalent lead role.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards (ASPE or IFRS) and financial controls.
- Experience managing multiple entities or locations, including CAD and USD transactions.
- Working knowledge of HST/GST, payroll, and corporate tax requirements.
- Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
- Experience with accounting systems such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, or Sage.
- Experience in clinical research, healthcare, life sciences, or other regulated environments (preferred).
- Familiarity with CTAs, sponsor invoicing, and clinical trial budgeting (preferred).
- Familiarity with CTMS platforms and clinical trial financial workflows (preferred).
- Experience supporting audits and inspections (preferred).
- Prior experience in a growing or multi-site research organization (preferred).
- Experience preparing SR&ED claims (preferred).
