About the Role

IQM is establishing a new R&D site in Edinburgh, UK, focusing on the integration of quantum systems with classical High-Performance Computing (HPC). This role involves building the site from the ground up, leading technical integration efforts, managing partnerships, and connecting the UK site to IQM's global operations. The position offers a unique opportunity to shape a new team and contribute to the advancement of quantum computing.

Responsibilities

  • Build the R&D site from scratch, establishing ways of working, tools, facilities, IT, compute, and partner access.
  • Recruit, onboard, and manage the first engineers, scientists, and team leads, setting the site's culture.
  • Lead hands-on technical work integrating IQM systems with HPC environments, including hybrid workflows, real-time decoding, and control-stack integration.
  • Set the technical direction for the team.
  • Manage the day-to-day R&D relationship with the HPC centre and QEC partner, covering joint work plans, technical meetings, integration, testing, benchmarking, and IP/data agreements.
  • Ensure publications and know-how transfer align with collaboration agreements.
  • Own the program's delivery, including site budget and forecasts, cost alignment, progress reports, and milestone reviews.
  • Connect the UK site to the rest of IQM's R&D teams to integrate results into the global roadmap and products.
  • Represent IQM in the UK quantum ecosystem and identify growth collaborations.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience leading R&D teams, including building and scaling a team from scratch.
  • Experience hiring, onboarding, line-managing, and developing people.
  • Strong quantum computing background with depth in quantum error correction and/or quantum hardware and control systems.
  • Understanding of HPC environments and hybrid quantum-classical computing demands (software integration, scheduling, low-latency classical processing).
  • Experience with collaborative R&D projects, including managing budgets, milestone reporting, cost compliance, and resource planning across organizations.
  • Ability to solve problems proactively.
  • Skill in clearly explaining complex work to diverse audiences.
  • Existing network in the UK quantum and HPC ecosystem (Bonus).
  • Hands-on experience with real-time decoding, control-stack integration, or hybrid workflows on HPC systems (Bonus).
