About the Role
QRT is offering a 3–6 month or 12-month industrial placement internship in Surveillance, starting in 2027. This program provides practical experience in monitoring global trading activity, identifying potential market abuse, and improving surveillance processes within the Compliance department.
Responsibilities
- Reviewing trade surveillance alerts and investigating unusual or suspicious trading activity.
- Developing an understanding of market-abuse typologies.
- Analyzing trading activity across multiple asset classes, markets, and jurisdictions.
- Helping integrate new markets, products, and data sources into the surveillance framework.
- Working with technology and data teams to improve monitoring tools and surveillance processes.
- Analyzing order and trade data to identify patterns indicating suspicious or disorderly trading.
- Supporting the investigation and documentation of daily surveillance alerts.
- Analyzing flagged electronic or voice communications.
- Testing and calibrating surveillance alerts, thresholds, and detection logic.
- Building data-analysis or automation tools to improve surveillance review efficiency.
- Designing and developing data quality controls.
- Working with Compliance, Trading, Risk, and Technology colleagues to understand trading behavior and resolve data or surveillance issues.
Requirements
- Penultimate or final year students pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in a STEM discipline.
- On track for a 2:1 degree or above.
- Interest in financial markets and electronic trading.
- Basic knowledge of different asset classes such as equities, derivatives, fixed income, and cryptocurrencies.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to investigate data, identify patterns, and reach well-reasoned conclusions.
- Experience with Python or SQL.
- Familiarity with data analysis, automation, or the use of emerging coding and AI-assisted programming applications.
- Good communication and writing skills.
- Curious and intellectually rigorous with a genuine interest in financial markets, technology, and data.
- Analytical and detail-oriented with the ability to investigate unfamiliar problems in a structured manner.
- Clear and thoughtful communicator capable of explaining findings to both technical and non-technical colleagues.
- Collaborative and comfortable working with Compliance, Trading, Risk, and Technology teams.
- Entrepreneurial, self-motivated, and results-driven approach.
