About the Role

As a Piping and Layout Design Engineer, you will be responsible for creating and maintaining piping specifications and material classes, as well as efficiently routing pipes. You will also create technical drawings and perform technical calculations, including pressure calculations for piping and determining nozzle loads. In close collaboration with EPC contractors and other engineers, you will participate in the design and layout of plant layouts and modular plant concepts, working closely with interdisciplinary project teams. Your tasks will also include selecting suitable materials according to technical specifications. Additionally, you will support the review of executed work and advise contractors on technical issues.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and implement technical requirements and transfer 2D P&IDs and piping lists into 3D CAD models, including pipe routing, creation of technical drawings, isometrics, and plant layouts.
  • Create and maintain piping specifications, material classes, pressure ratings, pipe wall thicknesses, connection specifications, and material class lists, considering international norms and standards.
  • Perform technical calculations and analyses, including hydraulic design, pressure loss and wall thickness calculations, piping flexibility analyses, and static and dynamic stress analyses according to relevant codes like ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, and EN 13480.
  • Verify permissible loads on nozzles of pumps and static equipment according to WRC-107 and coordinate with relevant departments regarding mechanical loads on plant components.
  • Design and specify pipe supports in collaboration with the Pipe Stress Engineer and review support positions and types based on approved stress analyses and technical drawings.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including piping lists, critical piping lists, material take-offs (MTOs), bills of materials (BOMs), data sheets for special piping components, material requisitions (MRs), and technical bid comparisons (TBTs).
  • Participate in the development and review of P&IDs, package specifications, design and fabrication specifications, project schedules, budgets, and construction planning.
  • Evaluate customer-specific requirements, identify technical deviations, and develop suitable alternative solutions, participating in all project phases from feasibility studies and basic engineering through FEED and detail engineering to EPC and EPCM projects.
  • Review supplier drawings and coordinate and support inspection, testing, and acceptance activities for piping and plant components, including requirements for insulation, coating, pressure testing, and non-destructive testing (NDE).
  • Ensure compliance with relevant international norms, technical codes, customer specifications, and internal quality standards.
  • Collaborate closely with internal departments, the Lead Engineer, customers, suppliers, EPC contractors, and other project stakeholders, and participate in cross-functional project and coordination meetings.
  • Ensure the technical quality, completeness, and accuracy of work results and the timely completion of all assigned tasks.

Requirements

  • Completed Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a comparable qualification.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in piping and layout engineering, ideally in the oil and gas industry, refinery, petrochemical, or chemical plant construction, or comparable industries.
  • In-depth knowledge of international norms, codes, and technical standards, particularly ASME B31.3, ASME B36.10, ASME B16.5, ASME B36.19, EN 13480, EN 1127, and ANSI/ASME standards.
  • Good user knowledge of AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and 3D design software such as SP3D or E3D.
  • Experience in the design and construction of steel and plastic piping systems and good mechanical understanding.
  • Knowledge of relevant process parameters such as pressure, temperature, flow rate, and level, as well as the corresponding measurement and control technology.
  • Strong technical understanding, good spatial visualization skills, and a meticulous, detail-oriented approach to work.
  • Very good command of German and English, both written and spoken.
  • Additional technical expertise in SOEC, steam methane reforming (SMR), fuel cells, clean fuels, energy storage systems, and/or chemical synthesis (e.g., ammonia and methanol) is of particular advantage.
  • Good user knowledge of pipe stress analysis software CAESAR II is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of handling Swagelok piping systems and associated fittings is an advantage.
  • Experience with material management software and knowledge of material and corrosion analysis is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of the functionality and performance of pressure vessels, pumps, and heat exchangers is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of relevant legal and regulatory requirements, particularly regarding compliance, zoning, and building regulations, is an advantage.
