About the Role

Lead the design and delivery of scalable, high-performance payment solutions across modern cloud-native platforms. Shape a critical area of Australia’s payments landscape while mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction across teams. Work across Java, TypeScript, AWS and distributed systems while setting strong engineering standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and engineering direction across complex software initiatives.
  • Lead system design and make pragmatic architectural decisions for secure, scalable and high-performance distributed applications.
  • Design and evolve APIs and microservices using backend technologies such as Java and Spring Boot, Node.js and TypeScript.
  • Build cloud-native solutions using AWS, Kubernetes, containerisation and Infrastructure as Code.
  • Apply event-driven architecture and messaging technologies such as Kafka to solve complex integration and distributed-system challenges.
  • Champion modern engineering practices across CI/CD, DevSecOps, observability, resilience and production lifecycle ownership.
  • Work closely with engineers, Staff Engineers, Principal Engineers and other technology partners to establish clear technical direction.
  • Coach and mentor engineers while influencing engineering standards and practices across teams.
  • Contribute to the evolution of PayTo and mandate-management capabilities supporting scheduled payments.

Requirements

  • Experienced software engineer and technical leader combining deep technical capability with strong architectural judgement.
  • Comfortable leading through influence and expertise rather than formal people management.
  • Ability to bring engineers together to solve complex technical challenges.
  • Strong modern software engineering experience using Java and Spring Boot and/or Node.js and TypeScript.
  • Hands-on experience designing APIs, microservices and distributed applications.
  • Strong cloud-native engineering experience with AWS, with exposure to technologies such as Kubernetes, containerisation and Infrastructure as Code.
  • Experience designing or working with event-driven architectures, ideally using Kafka or similar messaging platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of CI/CD and DevSecOps, including observability, resilience and owning software throughout its production lifecycle.
  • Strong system-design skills and experience making architectural decisions across complex technology environments.
  • Experience providing technical leadership across multiple engineering teams or squads.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor engineers and influence technical standards beyond your immediate team.
  • Exposure to AI-assisted engineering tools or practices is valuable.
