- Conduct initial legal assessments of incoming matters to determine viability and next steps, including identifying required documentation, providing emergency legal advice, and performing limited scope work.
- Gain and maintain proficient knowledge of civil litigation, employment law, public benefits, probate law, elder law, and direct services legal advocacy, including client and time management.
- Apply legal frameworks to distinguish between matters requiring immediate action, brief service, or referral to full scope representation or external resources.
- Clearly explain guests' rights, options, and risks in accessible language and advise on gathering relevant documentation.
- Meet with guests with nonviable legal matters to explain the reasons.
- Provide emergency legal advice for time-sensitive issues.
- Perform discrete, limited scope legal tasks such as document review, letter drafting, or court form preparation.
- Collaborate with the Managing Attorney - External Partnerships to place matters with pro bono partners, panel attorneys, or other legal aid organizations.
- Identify and create/facilitate additional capacity-building programs within triage, such as clinics and collaborations with non-legal programs.
Requirements
- Membership in good standing with the State Bar of California, or licensed in good standing with another state bar.
- Previous experience practicing in one or more of the LEJ team's practice areas.
- Strong time management skills and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Active demonstration of cultural humility and sensitivity to barriers low-income San Franciscans face.
- Demonstrated understanding of providing trauma-informed advocacy for clients in crisis.
- Ability to commute to ODL's offices three days a week for in-person intakes and meetings.
- High level of comfort learning and using technology and cloud-based case management systems (Salesforce, Dropbox, Google Suite).
