About the Role
We are a stealth startup in AI and bio, building infrastructure for data generation. You will help write the core software behind our lab, working across the stack with the founding software engineer and the wider team, with real ownership and a direct line to the founders.
Responsibilities
- Build the core software behind our lab, working across the stack.
- Develop data infrastructure and the data model for ingesting, processing, and outputting data.
- Create APIs and services for system and agent integration.
- Implement workflow orchestration and real-time lab activity tracking systems.
- Build pipelines for structuring incoming data with audit logging.
- Develop the underlying platform including data-serving abstractions, auth, access control, and observability.
- Own services end to end, including reliability, observability, and on-call responsibilities.
- Shape the architecture and contribute to future hiring decisions.
- Write production code from the first weeks.
- Help set the architecture and engineering culture.
- Work closely with scientists and the data-producing team.
Requirements
- Shipped production systems that other people depend on.
- Write good code at speed.
- Have opinions about architecture and know when to defer.
- Happy owning a service end to end, including less glamorous parts.
- Worked across the stack and can pick up new technologies as needed.
- Curiosity about the possibilities and implications of the infrastructure.
- Strive for excellence and raise the bar.
- Comfortable with ambiguity and have a bias towards action, learning, and iterating.
- Able to make decisions with partial information and revisit when better information arrives.
- Think about the 'why', 'who', and 'how to make it 100x better'.
- Fluent in at least one production programming language.
- Build with coding agents by default.
- Practice rigorous CI/CD and automated testing.
- Own architecture, reliability, observability, and on-call responsibilities.
- Experience at the software-to-physical-world boundary is a plus.
- Experience with orchestration, scheduling, workflow engines, or large-scale distributed systems is a plus.
- Experience with data-intensive systems (pipelines, ontologies, knowledge graphs, provenance, lineage) is a plus.
- Early-stage or founding-engineer experience at a venture-backed company is a plus.
- Ability to work in a hybrid pattern with regular time in London.
- Willingness to work at the software-to-physical-world boundary.
- Ability to work collaboratively with software, hardware, and biology teams.
- Pass screening, behavioral/cultural fit conversation, technical session/work sample, and reference checks.
