About the Role
This role sits at the start of our protein work, where you will be responsible for making proteins, from DNA through to purified, quality-checked protein in 96-well format, ready for downstream assays. You will have real ownership and a direct line to the founders in a stealth startup environment focused on building AI infrastructure for biology.
Responsibilities
- Prepare expression templates from synthetic gene fragments using PCR and Golden Gate or Gibson assembly.
- Express proteins using cell-free systems, E. coli, and mammalian (HEK293) systems.
- Purify proteins by affinity capture, primarily using magnetic beads in plates.
- Confirm protein production using quantification, CE-SDS, and SEC.
- Record every step of the process, including inputs, lots, conditions, outputs, and failures.
- Assist in moving settled protocols from the bench to liquid handlers and the automated platform.
- Support molecular characterisation runs downstream.
- Perform cell culture, including routine passage, banking, and seeding assay plates.
- Revise protocols and document failure capture methods.
Requirements
- A PhD in biochemistry, protein science, molecular biology or a related field, or a BSc or MSc with two to three years of hands-on lab experience.
- Industry experience in a high-throughput setting is preferred.
- Proficiency in molecular biology for expression: PCR, cloning by Golden Gate or Gibson assembly, and checking constructs by gel, fragment analysis or sequencing.
- Experience running recombinant protein expression and purification in cell-free, E. coli, or mammalian systems using affinity capture.
- Experience with protein QC: quantification, SDS-PAGE or CE-SDS, and critical result interpretation.
- Experience working in 96-well or 384-well plate formats with careful, traceable record-keeping.
- Experience with mammalian cell culture, including adherent and suspension lines, thawing, passaging, banking, and transient transfection of HEK293 or CHO cells for expression.
- Ability to keep records that others can follow.
- Proactive communication about issues.
