About the Role
As a fundamental researcher, your ground-breaking discoveries will make our embedded evaluations better. We are also developing a “Science of Scheming” and are looking for Research Scientists and Research Engineers who are excited to build a new hard science from the ground up.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with leading AI developers, gaining access to a breadth of models through long-term research collaborations.
- Deeply study RL dynamics leading to reward-seeking, evaluation awareness, or misaligned preferences; design and train model organisms, and scale insights to frontier systems.
- Work towards “Scaling laws of scheming” by building empirical foundations to predict how scheming risks evolve with model capability.
- Develop novel and ambitious evaluation techniques that can scale to highly evaluation-aware models.
- Deep dive into AI cognition to discover previously unobserved patterns in the reasoning processes of frontier AI systems.
Requirements
- Ability to design and execute fast-paced empirical research, focusing on speeding up iteration cycles and driving progress.
- Proficiency as an AI power-user, capable of leveraging AI to accelerate work and experimenting with new AI workflows.
- Strong conceptual thinking and writing skills, with familiarity in AI scheming literature and the ability to generate original ideas.
- High-quality scientific writing, figures, blog posts, microsites, and tweet threads for explaining work.
- Intense interest in AI progress, staying updated on model releases and AI cognition.
- Hands-on experience training LLMs via reinforcement learning, including resolving issues like GPU failures and debugging learning instabilities.
- Strong analytical skills with rigorous quantitative capabilities in fields like scaling laws, statistical physics, dynamical systems, or applied statistics.
- Comfort building mathematical models of empirical phenomena and extracting signal from noisy data.
- Commitment to the mission of preventing catastrophic AGI misalignment, demonstrated through an intense work culture.

- Recognised experts: USD 350,000 - USD 590,000 or £230,000 - £395,000
