About the Role
Apple is seeking an experienced Principal Software Engineer to join the Central Marketing's Marketing Enablement team in London. This role involves driving the technical architecture vision for marketing products, leading architecture discussions, establishing standards, and contributing to software development. It is a deeply hands-on, high-impact position shaping software development across a portfolio of products.
Responsibilities
- Own the cross-product architectural view, understanding product interdependencies and identifying areas for improvement.
- Define a target architecture and roadmap for consolidation, modernization, and structural improvements.
- Define and steward architectural standards for integration, interoperability, security, data handling, and operability.
- Create reference implementations, templates, and working examples to make standards adoptable.
- Prototype to de-risk significant architectural decisions.
- Contribute production-quality code to shared foundations.
- Engage directly in complex technical problems.
- Review solution designs and technical proposals to influence outcomes.
- Establish a repeatable assurance process across all deliveries.
- Advise on technology selection and investment decisions, assessing long-term cost, flexibility, and constraints.
- Lead architecture discussions with technical and non-technical audiences, driving to clear, documented decisions.
- Influence outcomes through technical leadership rather than authority.
- Set engineering standards and coach engineers on architectural thinking.
- Grow architectural capability across the organization.
Requirements
- Extensive hands-on full stack software engineering experience.
- Demonstrable track record of designing and building applications end to end.
- Several years in a principal engineer, architect, or equivalent senior technical role.
- Experience in advertising or marketing technology domains, including ad trafficking, campaign management, and creative asset management.
- Deep expertise in full stack web application development.
- Genuine fluency in Python or Java and the ability to reason about and review the other.
- Hands-on experience with modern web frameworks (React, FastAPI, Flask, Django, Spring Boot, Hibernate).
- Experience with relational data modeling (Postgres or equivalent).
- Experience with the design of APIs, service integrations, and event-driven interfaces.
- Practical experience with externally-facing systems, including authentication and authorization, content delivery, rate limiting, auditability, and associated security posture.
- Track record of leading architecture conversations to a decision, including with stakeholders holding competing priorities and limited technical background.
- Experience introducing an architecture practice (ADRs, review forums, published standards) into an organization and driving genuine adoption.
- Experience with platform and developer experience work that measurably reduced time to first release for other teams.
