About the Role

The Software Engineer II provides hands-on technical support for business-critical applications and platforms serving a large retail branch network. The role is responsible for investigating and resolving production issues across desktop services, web applications, and mainframe-connected systems, maintaining reliable and secure technology services, supporting releases and operational activities, and partnering with engineering, infrastructure, business, and control teams to deliver effective solutions. The supported environment spans both long-established and current technologies, and the role requires comfort working across the full stack rather than within a single layer.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve medium to moderately complex production incidents, service requests, and user inquiries, acting as an escalation point for front-line support teams.
  • Analyze application logs, system behaviour, alerts, and technical dependencies to identify root causes and restore service efficiently.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues with Windows services and applications deployed across a large managed device fleet, including device configuration, registry, environment, and system-level conditions on remote endpoints.
  • Investigate connectivity, session configuration, and access issues for mainframe systems reached through terminal emulation software.
  • Monitor application and platform health, identify recurring issues, and recommend improvements to reliability, performance, scalability, and operational efficiency.
  • Support application configuration, administration, maintenance, deployment, and release activities in accordance with enterprise standards, including software packaging and distribution to managed devices.
  • Work closely with software engineering, infrastructure, release management, security, and business partners to diagnose issues and coordinate timely resolution.
  • Participate in incident, problem, and change management processes, including documenting findings, remediation steps, and known errors.
  • Validate changes and releases through appropriate testing and regression activities before production implementation, including validation on pilot devices ahead of broader rollout.
  • Make reviewed code and configuration changes to supported applications where appropriate, rather than routing all defects to development queues.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, operational procedures, troubleshooting guides, and knowledge articles.
  • Identify opportunities to automate recurring support activities and improve monitoring, diagnostics, and operational processes.
  • Contribute to technology currency activities, including framework and dependency upgrades, and the testing and validation that accompanies them.
  • Escalate significant risks, service impacts, and unresolved technical issues through appropriate channels.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing across the team and support the development of consistent engineering and support practices.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule and occasional out-of-hours release support.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging technologies, engineering practices, security requirements, and enterprise standards relevant to the supported environment.

Requirements

  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills across applications and supporting technology components.
  • Experience supporting enterprise applications or platforms in a production environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret application and system logs and use monitoring or diagnostic tools to investigate issues.
  • Working knowledge of the software development lifecycle, release management, incident management, and change management practices.
  • Working knowledge of scripting or programming languages and SQL; experience with automation is an asset.
  • Understanding of application architecture, APIs, databases, infrastructure, and system integrations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently on moderately complex technical tasks, and collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Demonstrated focus on service reliability, security, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Experience supporting a large managed endpoint or desktop fleet, including software distribution tooling.
  • Familiarity with mainframe access and terminal emulation, including session configuration and keyboard mapping.
  • Exposure to both established and current technology stacks, including legacy application frameworks alongside modern application architectures.
  • Experience with modern front-end frameworks sufficient to diagnose user interface defects.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms, CI/CD pipelines, automation, and modern application architectures.
  • Prior financial services experience, particularly in retail banking operations.
