About the Role
Chef Robotics is seeking a Field Engineering Technician to maintain and repair deployed robotic food-portioning modules at customer sites. This hands-on role involves diagnosing issues, performing repairs, tuning module configurations, and providing field data to Engineering teams. You will work on-site, partnering with customer operations, and travel as needed. The role offers an opportunity to impact customer uptime, company revenue, and product design in a fast-paced startup environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform field repairs and diagnostics on Chef modules across mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, sensor, and controls systems, driving to root cause.
- Tune and validate module configurations and parameters through the HMI to improve throughput, accuracy, and uptime.
- Use logs, fleet data, and on-site observation to diagnose issues and escalate to engineers with evidence.
- Provide structured feedback to the Engineering team on recurring failures, design issues, and customer needs.
- Execute preventative maintenance and document wear trends.
- Run testing for new meals and ingredients, including setup, tuning, and result recording.
- Track and log hardware requests, part numbers, and quantities.
- Write and improve runbooks, work instructions, and troubleshooting guides.
- Coordinate with 3P technicians and guide customer operators on module care.
- Communicate findings, changes, and expectations clearly with customer operations teams.
- Follow customer site safety, food safety, and lockout/tagout requirements.
Requirements
- 2-5 years of hands-on experience maintaining, troubleshooting, or commissioning automated equipment (robotics, mechatronics, industrial automation, packaging, or food-processing machinery).
- Comfortable with electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, including reading schematics, using a multimeter, and working with sensors, motors, drives, and pneumatics.
- Experience with HMIs, PLCs, or equipment parameter configuration, with a methodical approach to changing settings and observing results.
- A systematic problem solver who forms hypotheses, isolates variables, and documents findings.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including providing actionable, evidence-backed feedback to Engineering.
- Comfortable with laptops, logs, and data tools.
- Able to travel regionally and work in food production environments, including wash-down, cold, and noisy areas, with PPE.
