About the Role

The Senior Director, AI Strategy and Innovation serves as the KIPP Foundation's AI expert, developing and leading a network-wide AI strategy to advance teaching, learning, and operations. This role coordinates AI initiatives across KIPP regions, manages pilot programs, and advises on AI vendors and approaches, with the potential to significantly impact how AI serves students nationally, particularly those at the margins.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead KIPP's multi-year, network-wide AI strategy.
  • Serve as the AI expert for the KIPP Foundation and advisor to regions and leadership on AI tools, uses, and risks.
  • Own KIPP's position on instructional AI and establish the network's standard for evaluating AI tools.
  • Translate the AI strategy for diverse audiences, including regional superintendents, development officers, and school leaders.
  • Manage the AI pilot group, setting priorities and evidence standards for pilots.
  • Design and administer the measurement system for AI pilots, assessing pilot quality and reporting on tool effectiveness.
  • Partner with the Schools team and external researchers to establish pilot evaluation designs.
  • Apply a common evaluation framework to all AI tools under consideration, assessing efficacy, alignment, accessibility, bias, cost, and data privacy.
  • Serve as the final recommender on AI vendors, uses, and approaches for Foundation and regional work.
  • Make recommendations on scaling, continuing, or stopping AI tools based on pilot data.
  • Identify, negotiate, and steward partnerships with research and development partners and key vendors.
  • Lead diligence on AI platforms with the Data and Technology team.
  • Help Foundation teams use AI more effectively in their work.
  • Coordinate AI work across KIPP regions, maintaining an inventory of tools, costs, and outcomes.
  • Advise regions on AI tool alignment with KIPP's approach and required evidence.
  • Broker multi-region pilots to facilitate shared learning and reduce duplicate spending.
  • Build relationships with funders investing in AI in education and position KIPP to attract philanthropic support.
  • Represent KIPP at conferences and forums related to AI in education.
  • Keep Foundation leaders informed about the AI ecosystem.
  • Own the strategic narrative and evidence base for external communications.
  • Prepare updates for the AI Working Group and the KIPP Foundation Board.
  • Incorporate pilot learnings into national guidance and the annual One KIPP planning cycle.

Requirements

  • 7-10+ years of professional experience, including 5+ years in K-12 education with progressive leadership responsibility.
  • Deep, current expertise in AI and its uses in education.
  • Credibility to advise school leaders, system leaders, and senior executives on AI capabilities and limitations.
  • Experience teaching or leading in schools serving KIPP's student population.
  • Classroom judgment to differentiate effective AI tools from those that merely demo well.
  • Proven record of leading strategy or major initiatives across a school system, CMO, or multi-region network.
  • Demonstrated experience designing measurement or evaluation systems for programs or pilots.
  • Experience working with research partners on comparison designs, subgroup breakouts, and data plans.
  • Proven record of negotiating and managing partnerships with vendors, research organizations, or universities.
  • Working knowledge of student data privacy, FERPA, and multi-state regulatory environments.
  • Experience building relationships with funders or securing philanthropic support is preferred.
