About the Role

We are seeking a technical leader to drive the engineering of our Data Platform, which supports all data teams at Funding Circle. This role involves leading the technical direction, owning the platform's quality, and mentoring engineers. You will play a key part in our migration to Snowflake and a federated "Data as a Product" model, ensuring the platform meets the needs of domain teams, Data Scientists, Analysts, and AI Agents.

Responsibilities

Lead the technical direction of the Data Platform and develop a clear engineering plan.
Own the technical quality of the platform, including Snowflake infrastructure, ingestion patterns, orchestration, CI/CD, observability, and cost controls.
Make and record technical decisions, running the decision-document process and escalating as needed.
Grow the team by mentoring engineers, spreading knowledge, and establishing a review culture.
Make it easy for domain teams, Data Scientists, Analysts, and AI Agents to build on the platform by defining standards and reusable patterns.
Lead the platform side of the Athena Snowflake migration, including source landing, reconciliation, and decommissioning.
Own operational excellence with the Engineering Manager, focusing on on-call quality, alerts, incident follow-ups, runbooks, and disaster recovery.
Own security and governance controls on the platform with Security and Data Governance teams.
Manage the technical relationship with platform vendors, including support, escalations, and roadmap input.
Explain technical trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders and data leadership.
Set and evolve team standards for AI-assisted engineering.
Work closely with the Principal Engineer to translate cross-domain architecture into the platform engineering plan.

Requirements

8+ years in Data & Analytics with proven experience as a Senior/Tech Lead setting architectural direction.
Deep, hands-on knowledge of Snowflake, including ideally Iceberg/open table formats and RBAC.
Advanced SQL, Python, and enterprise-grade dbt model development.
Experience designing end-to-end data pipelines combining batch, file-based, and streaming ingestion (Kafka/CDC) managed with Airflow orchestration.
Good understanding of data security and governance, including PII handling and access control.
Strong infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD skills.
Track record of writing clear design docs, explaining technical risks to non-technical stakeholders, and making decisions under uncertainty.
Able to architect custom AI solutions and smart automated systems that are safe, maintainable, and aligned with the company's mission.
Act as a technical bridge and mentor, training builders across the company to move from basic AI usage to sophisticated system creation.
