About the Role

The CS & TnS ML Team keeps Mercari safe for millions of users by building machine learning models to detect prohibited items, harmful behavior, fraud, and abuse, and by automating customer replies. Our models operate in real-time, making critical decisions within milliseconds. We manage the entire lifecycle of each model, from initial specification through training, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing improvement.

Responsibilities

Own an ML problem from specification to delivery, working with product and operation teams to define measurable targets and build, ship, and maintain the corresponding models.
Design, train, and evaluate models using image, text, and behavioral data, applying them to domains such as item moderation, comment moderation, transaction message moderation, customer auto-reply, and payment fraud prevention.
Deploy models as reliable, low-latency real-time services, building CI/CD pipelines, rollout/rollback paths, and monitoring model health, latency, and cost.
Build offline evaluations that mirror production conditions, verify changes through shadow runs and A/B tests, and detect drift and quality regressions early using dashboards and alerts.
Improve the data underlying each model by collaborating with moderators, customer reports, and labeling tools, addressing label noise, bias, and gaps.
Identify opportunities where ML can reduce risk or manual work, propose initiatives with clear business cases, and drive them to completion.
Respond rapidly to urgent requests, such as viral incidents or policy changes, delivering a safe initial fix quickly and then refining it.
Undertake tasks beyond the defined role, including data pipelines, backend services, and infrastructure, as needed to solve problems, utilizing AI coding tools to enhance speed and efficiency while maintaining quality.

Requirements

Shared belief in the mission and values of Mercari Group.
Proficiency in Python.
Daily use of AI coding tools in development work, with a habit of reviewing and verifying their output.
Solid foundation in machine learning and deep learning, with hands-on experience training, evaluating, and debugging models (through work, research, or personal projects).
Eagerness to learn quickly, take end-to-end ownership, and work across areas of expertise.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to propose ideas and align stakeholders (product, operations, policy).
Proficient English (CEFR B2).
Basic Japanese (CEFR A2).
