About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical design of the Bolt platform, an autonomous mobile base carrying robot arms. You will be responsible for the platform's mechanical architecture, from concept through production release, guiding a team of mechanical engineers through prototype builds, testing, and release.

Responsibilities

  • Own the mechanical architecture of the Bolt platform: chassis and frame, drivetrain and suspension, battery and power-electronics packaging, control box, and arm-to-base interface
  • Lead concept trade studies (payload, center of gravity and tip stability, drive configuration, battery capacity, serviceability, cost) and drive decisions to closure with software, EE, safety, and product
  • Perform hands-on, technically deep work including detailed design in SolidWorks, load cases and hand calculations, FEA, tolerance stackups, and DFM for various manufacturing processes
  • Plan and execute prototype builds and the test program to prove durability, stability, and performance prior to safety certification
  • Guide and mentor mechanical engineers, conduct mechanical design reviews, and set standards for drawings, analysis, and release
  • Partner with Functional Safety on mechanical aspects of certification and with manufacturing on build and service strategy

Requirements

  • Taken a mobile robot or comparable electromechanical vehicle from concept to production
  • Experience with challenges such as stability under dynamic loads, battery packaging, thermal and IP enclosures, cabling and service access, and cost management
  • Ability to spend approximately 60% of time on design and analysis and 40% on mentoring, planning, collaboration, builds, and test
  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • 10+ years of product design experience, including a mobile robot, AMR/AGV, or similar electromechanical vehicle shipped at scale
  • Mastery of structures and mechanisms including load path design, fatigue, stiffness, bearings and drivetrain components, sheet metal and casting design, and tolerance analysis
  • Proficiency in hand calculations and FEA for design sizing and validation
  • Expertise in SolidWorks (parts, large assemblies, drawings, simulation) and familiarity with PDM/PLM release processes
  • Proven experience leading engineers through an NPI cycle and providing direct design feedback
  • Clear design documentation, concise trade studies, and effective design reviews
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-moving team with changing requirements and tight timelines
