About the Role
Serve as the primary functional safety contact for key customers and their certification bodies, presenting and defending safety concepts, manuals, and FMEDA. Drive the derivation of IC-level safety requirements with customer system safety teams, including safety functions, target SIL, demand mode, proof-test intervals, and diagnostic coverage, and agree on a DIA or equivalent. Support customer listings for UL 1973, UL 9540, and IEC 62619 where BMS safety functions are involved, and address assessor findings. Represent the company in standards and industry forums. Own safety decisions for the product line, including target SIL per safety function, safety concept, and architecture trade-offs. Define and manage the functional safety management system per IEC 61508-1 clause 6, encompassing safety plans, roles, competence, independence, tailoring, and safety cases per product. Structure safety requirements work, including derivation, allocation, traceability, and verification, and manage the lifecycle from concept through IC design, silicon validation, firmware, and release. This includes hardware safety architecture, FMEDA and pin FMEA, DFA, FTA, diagnostic coverage, PFH and SFF/HFT (Route 1H/2H), and proven-in-use where applicable. Own the safety manual and evidence package for compliant items, ensuring design and firmware build consistency with standards and the safety concept. Establish best practices for design and verification, including safety design reviews, fault-injection and diagnostic verification, tool qualification, and change/impact management for derivatives and die revisions. Plan and conduct third-party assessments and certifications (TUV, exida, UL) and internal safety audits, resolving nonconformities. Address adjacent requirements such as IEC 60730-1 Annex H, IEC 63056, IEC 62619 clause 8, EU Batteries Regulation 2023/1542, and JIS C 8715-2, aligning with product security on IEC 62443-4-1/4-2 for a unified safety and security process. Build safety competence across the IC design organization and define and hire the functional safety team as the product line expands.
Responsibilities
- Single point of contact on functional safety for lead customers and their certification bodies; present and defend the safety concept, safety manual and FMEDA.
- Derive the IC-level safety requirements with customer system safety teams (safety functions, target SIL, demand mode, proof-test interval, diagnostic coverage); agree a DIA or equivalent.
- Support customer UL 1973 / UL 9540 / IEC 62619 listings where BMS safety functions are in scope; close assessor findings.
- Represent the company at standards and industry forums.
- Own the safety decisions for the product line: target SIL per safety function, safety concept, architecture trade-offs.
- Define and run the functional safety management system (IEC 61508-1 clause 6): safety plan, roles and competence, independence, tailoring, safety case per product.
- Structure the safety requirements work (derivation, allocation, traceability, verification) and drive the lifecycle from concept through IC design, silicon validation, firmware and release: hardware safety architecture, FMEDA and pin FMEA, DFA, FTA, diagnostic coverage, PFH and SFF / HFT (Route 1H / 2H), proven-in-use where applicable.
- Own the safety manual and evidence package for compliant items; keep what design and firmware build consistent with the standard and the safety concept.
- Set best practice for design and verification: safety design reviews, fault-injection and diagnostic verification, tool qualification, change and impact management for derivatives and die revisions.
- Plan and run third-party assessment and certification (TUV, exida, UL) and internal safety audits; close nonconformities.
- Cover adjacent requirements: IEC 60730-1 Annex H, IEC 63056, IEC 62619 clause 8, EU Batteries Regulation 2023/1542, JIS C 8715-2; align with product security on IEC 62443-4-1 / 4-2 so safety and security share one process.
- Build safety competence across the IC design organization; define and hire the functional safety team as the product line grows.
Requirements
- 10+ years in electronics or semiconductor development, including 5+ years leading functional safety on products certified to IEC 61508 or ISO 26262, with demonstrated ability to work to IEC 61508 (SIL 2 or higher), the standard this role delivers against.
- Must have taken an IC, module or controller through third-party assessment.
- Hands-on command of IEC 61508-1, -2 and -3: hardware architectural constraints, FMEDA, diagnostic coverage, PFH / PFD, safety manuals for compliant items, software safety lifecycle.
- Working knowledge of at least one of: UL 1973, UL 9540, IEC 62619, IEC 60730-1 Annex H, IEC 62061 / ISO 13849, UL 991 / UL 1998.
- Battery system fluency: cell monitoring, balancing, contactor control, isolation, thermal management, state estimation, and the failure modes that matter (overcharge, over-discharge, over-temperature, short circuit, thermal propagation).
- Enough mixed-signal and digital IC design background to review safety architectures and diagnostics with designers as a peer.
- Track record of making and defending safety decisions with engineering and business leadership, setting up requirements processes from scratch, and running customer engagements and assessor audits.
- Fluent written and spoken English and Japanese.
- Degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
- TUV FS Engineer / Expert, exida CFSE / CFSP, or UL functional safety certification.
- IEC 61508 delivery in stationary storage, industrial automation or process instrumentation; ISO 26262 alongside it helps with customers taking the ASIL C route under UL 9540.
- IEC 62443-4-1 / 4-2 exposure (safety and security share one lifecycle here); ISO/SAE 21434 acceptable as an alternative.
- Familiarity with OCP ORv3 BBU specifications or data-center power architecture.
