About the Role

Validity is seeking an AI Design Lead to own the comprehensive design vision for Engage, our AI-powered email marketing platform. This role requires deep customer understanding, setting the product's look, feel, and behavior, and maintaining a high standard of quality for B2B software. The position is within an AI-native, code-centric team that utilizes AI assistance in its workflow, moving away from traditional tools like Figma. Designers are embedded in squads and own their workflows, collaborating with technically proficient individuals. The role emphasizes taste and judgment as critical inputs to the system and defining great design within an AI-native context. The scope extends beyond the traditional UI to include interactions via AI assistants and integrations, demanding design for the entire user experience across various surfaces.

Responsibilities

  • Own the product design vision, setting and holding the direction for the product's look, feel, and behavior from customer problem through UX to shipped experience.
  • Set and hold a high bar for design quality, bringing taste and judgment to lift the team's standard.
  • Deeply understand the customer by regularly observing customer sessions and designing from firsthand workflow understanding.
  • Design for the entire customer experience across multiple surfaces, including those not fully controlled by the company.
  • Define 'good' design on surfaces not fully controlled, even when pixel-perfect control is not possible.
  • Partner closely with product and engineering to settle UX and requirements early and maintain a high-trust collaboration loop.
  • Guide teams toward consistency while respecting individual workflow needs.
  • Help define design practices on an AI-native team, working with AI assistance and focusing on taste and judgment for key decisions.
  • Teach, mentor, and build a feedback culture by running high-trust crit practices and fostering a safe environment for candid feedback.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years in product design with a portfolio showcasing ownership of a product's design direction.
  • Deep interest in and instinct for users and their workflows.
  • Experience setting a bar and leading a team to achieve it.
  • Track record designing software for complex B2B workflows where credibility, clarity, and coherence are paramount.
  • Proven experience shaping user experience on surfaces not fully controlled (e.g., integrations, embedded experiences, assistants, agent-driven interfaces).
  • Hands-on experience using AI tools in the design process and curiosity about AI-assisted design.
  • Comfort with prototyping in code or with AI, rather than relying solely on static mockups.
  • Well-developed design sensibility, exceptional taste, and judgment to differentiate good from great.
  • Deep understanding of direct customer engagement and a habit of designing from firsthand understanding.
  • Experience coordinating multiple teams toward product coherence while respecting individual workflow needs.
  • Demonstrated experience developing high-trust, iterative relationships with Product and Engineering teams.
  • Experience mentoring designers and running candid crit practices.
  • Exceptional communication skills, able to articulate design decisions and standards in writing and conversation.
