About the Role
We are seeking an engineer to manage data handling across Thinking Machines, focusing on collection, storage, access, retention, and usage for training, evaluation, and products. You will build systems for privacy protection, from data inventory and classification to access controls and deletion, collaborating with researchers and engineers on complex privacy challenges. This role is for someone who views privacy as an engineering problem, capable of balancing privacy needs with model quality, research velocity, and product utility.
Responsibilities
- Implement and enforce privacy and data governance across internal systems by building and integrating systems like data classification tagging, retention jobs, deletion pipelines, and data classifiers.
- Build isolation guarantees to protect customer and user data, including training data and conversations with interfaces.
- Conduct privacy reviews and threat models on new data sources, training runs, and product features, implementing controls, checks, or tooling.
- Translate legal and policy requirements (GDPR, CCPA, contractual commitments) into working code, including policy-as-code, CI checks, and pipeline enforcement.
- Maintain shared libraries and guardrails that default to privacy and fix them when they break or become outdated.
Requirements
- Built and shipped at least one production privacy or data governance system and owned it through operation.
- Written and operated production code in Python or a comparable language.
- Direct experience enforcing privacy or governing data in an AI/ML data pipeline.
- Chosen pragmatic controls over ideal ones on real systems.
- Written a technical requirement or control directly from a legal or policy obligation.
