About the Role
This hands-on role serves as the daily technical presence supporting Schneider Electric’s Energy Manager and the TAMIU Campus Operations team, maintaining safe, reliable, and efficient operation of campus systems. The resource acts as a first responder for issues, performs troubleshooting and basic repairs, coordinates contractors, documents work, and supports optimization of the central utility plant and campus facilities.
Responsibilities
- Serve as Schneider Electric’s day-to-day on-site technical contact for equipment, controls, comfort, and facility-system issues.
- Respond to service requests and alarms; investigate symptoms, identify likely root causes, stabilize conditions when appropriate, and coordinate resolution through the correct internal or external resource.
- Operate and troubleshoot campus HVAC systems, including chillers, cooling towers, boilers, pumps, air-handling equipment, make-up air units, exhaust systems, VFDs, and chilled-water and heating-hot-water distribution.
- Monitor, navigate, and support operation of campus building automation systems, including Siemens, Trane, JCI, and Schneider Electric EcoStruxure Building Operation as deployed.
- Check field devices and controls, including sensors, actuators, valves, dampers, controllers, relays, safeties, and communication components; verify correct operation after service or replacement.
- Perform basic HVAC and controls maintenance and minor repairs using hand tools, a multimeter, and other appropriate test equipment within training, authorization, and safety requirements.
- Assist with installation, replacement, checkout, recommissioning, and documentation of controls devices and related equipment.
- Support commissioning and functional verification of control sequences, schedules, setpoints, alarms, and equipment operation.
- Help maintain efficient central plant operation, including equipment staging, scheduling, demand-management activities, and implementation of approved operating strategies.
- Use available analytics and monitoring platforms, including Building Advisor, Resource Advisor, power monitoring, and work-order or asset-management tools, to identify faults, prioritize work, and document outcomes.
- Coordinate planned maintenance, repairs, service interruptions, contractor access, inspections, and equipment replacement activities with TAMIU personnel and the Schneider Electric team.
- Provide technical oversight and field coordination for mechanical and controls subcontractors, confirming work scope, site readiness, progress, and operational turnover.
- Maintain timely records of service calls, findings, actions, parts, contractor activity, equipment status, and unresolved risks; provide concise updates to affected stakeholders.
- Support the Energy Manager with performance reviews, trend analysis, energy-saving opportunities, Key Operating Savings Strategies, and recurring client reporting.
- Participate in emergency response and periodic after-hours phone or on-site support when campus operations require escalation.
- Assist with technical training for TAMIU personnel and Schneider Electric team members, and contribute to operating procedures and site documentation.
- Maintain a visible, professional presence on campus and build productive relationships with facility staff, administrators, building representatives, vendors, and contractors.
Requirements
- Five or more years of relevant experience in commercial or institutional HVAC, central plant operations, building automation, controls service, energy services, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot mechanical and BAS issues in occupied facilities.
- Working knowledge of water-cooled chiller plants, hydronic systems, air-handling systems, pumps, VFDs, and HVAC control sequences.
- Ability to read equipment documentation, control drawings, points lists, sequences of operation, wiring diagrams, and service reports.
- Competence using common hand tools, electrical test equipment, laptops, and mobile work-order tools.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical issues to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally as required for parts, vendor, or campus-support needs.
- Ability to work independently, organize competing priorities, and collaborate effectively with a multi-disciplinary team.
- Ability to walk a large campus; climb stairs and ladders; access mechanical rooms, rooftops, and equipment areas; work around heat, noise, and active machinery; and safely lift and carry tools or components customary for the role.
