About the Role

The Risk and Insurance Manager coordinates Chinatown CDC’s day-to-day insurance and risk-management activities, supporting insurance renewals, claims, risk assessments, and loss prevention. This role serves as an internal resource on insurance requirements and routine risk questions, prepares analysis for leadership, and helps maintain organization-wide risk-management practices.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the organization’s commercial insurance program, including the annual renewal process, exposure information, and routine broker and carrier communication.
  • Manage insurance-related administration and tracking of claims and incidents in collaboration with the departments involved.
  • Manage organization-wide risk assessments, maintain the enterprise risk register, and track agreed-upon mitigation activities.
  • Review insurance requirements and advise on routine risks related to property operations, construction, vendors, workplace safety, programs, technology, and organizational activities.
  • Provide regular risk, insurance, claims, and loss-trend reports for the Senior Director and other leaders.
  • Support an initial organization-wide assessment of risks associated with Chinatown CDC's properties, developments, rehabilitation projects, operations, programs, workforce, technology, vehicles, and administrative functions.
  • Manage cross-functional risk reviews and help leadership prioritize risks based on severity, likelihood, operational impact, mission impact, and cost.
  • Manage the annual renewal calendar, applications, exposure schedules, property values, loss information, and supporting documentation; work with the broker and internal departments to gather accurate underwriting information.
  • Review insurance proposals, policy summaries, endorsements, exclusions, limits, deductibles, and coverage changes and prepare comparisons for the Senior Director of Asset Management.
  • Responsible for organized insurance policies, schedules, binders, invoices, and related records; respond to routine insurance questions and coordinate more complex coverage questions with the broker, carrier, legal counsel, or Senior Director.
  • Assist with evaluating insurance needs for acquisitions, developments, rehabilitation projects, capital improvements, new programs, and operational changes.
  • Responsible for tracking premiums, deductibles, retained losses, claim costs, and other components of the organization’s total cost of risk.
  • Responsible for certificate-of-insurance program and review requests for exceptions.
  • Manage timely notice of property, liability, automobile, cyber, workers’ compensation, construction, and other potentially covered claims to the broker and carrier; gather and organize claim documentation and maintain centralized records.
  • Responsible for claim status, reserves, deductibles, recoveries, open items, and deadlines; follow up with adjusters, brokers, and internal departments.
  • Report and analysis of claim frequency, severity, status, cost, and emerging trends; participate in post-incident reviews and help document corrective-action recommendations.
  • Support workers’ compensation claim reviews, loss analysis, prevention, and return-to-work coordination in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Coordinate insurance and risk-management advice regarding significant claims and settlements while coordinating with legal counsel and authorized decision-makers.
  • Support periodic assessments of risks associated with properties, projects, operations, programs, workforce, vehicles, technology, and administrative functions.
  • Manage the enterprise risk register—risk descriptions, potential impacts, mitigation plans, responsible departments, target dates, and implementation status—and track agreed-upon corrective actions.
  • Conduct or coordinate routine property, workplace, program, security, and project risk reviews; coordinate responses to loss-control recommendations from carriers, brokers, consultants, and public agencies.
  • Partner with Information Technology and leadership to evaluate cybersecurity, privacy, data-management, technology-vendor, and cyber-insurance risks.
  • Support the organization's risk-management framework for emergency preparedness, disaster response, and business continuity in partnership with responsible operating departments.
  • Manage emergency-preparedness and business-continuity planning, exercises, and significant-incident reviews; provide insurance and risk-management support during significant incidents.
  • Partner with Information Technology on cyber-insurance applications, carrier requirements, and identified cyber or privacy risks.
  • Develop and implement practical policies, standards, tools, and training that strengthen risk awareness and consistent risk-management practices.
  • Analyze incidents, near misses, and claims to identify and provide analysis for organization-wide policy, training, physical, or procedural improvements.
  • Provide quarterly risk and insurance reports to the Senior Director of Asset Management and Deputy Director, including significant exposures, claims trends, insurance-market developments, mitigation progress, and matters requiring leadership decisions.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Senior Director of Asset Management and Deputy Director regarding material organizational risks.
  • Support the evaluation of insurance needs for new construction, rehabilitation, capital projects, and major repairs; coordinate builders-risk information and contractor, consultant, and vendor insurance documentation.
  • Maintain standard insurance requirements for contractors, vendors, consultants, service providers, and program partners; manage certificates of insurance, endorsements, and requests for routine exceptions.
  • Review insurance and indemnification provisions from a risk perspective and refer unusual, complex, or high-risk terms to the Senior Director or legal counsel.
  • Prepare quarterly dashboards and reports covering insurance costs, claims, loss trends, open recommendations, and significant exposures; support preparation of executive and Board risk reporting led by the Senior Director.
  • Manage and maintain risk-management procedures, forms, checklists, guidance, and training materials; coordinate cross-functional meetings and follow-up activities when requested.
  • Request information reasonably necessary to coordinate insurance renewals, claims, incidents, risk reviews, and mitigation tracking.
  • Communicate routine insurance requirements and risk recommendations to supervisors and staff.
  • Coordinate cross-functional claim, incident, and risk reviews.
  • Follow up on agreed-upon corrective actions and elevate material, urgent, overdue, or unresolved matters.
  • Recommend coverage, policy, process, or loss-prevention changes for review by the Senior Director of Asset Management and other appropriate leaders.
  • Embody organization values (respect & compassion, empowerment, teamwork).
  • Contribute to a safe and pleasant work environment.
  • Follow policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.
