About the Role
Freddie Mac is seeking a hands-on Full Stack Tech Lead Engineer to lead the design and delivery of modern, intuitive enterprise applications with a strong emphasis on UI/UX, front-end architecture, accessibility, and user-centered engineering. This role combines full stack engineering depth with technical leadership, establishing reusable front-end patterns, translating complex business workflows into clear user experiences, defining service and API integration approaches, and guiding engineers through the development lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Lead front-end and full stack architecture for modern enterprise web applications.
- Provide hands-on technical direction to engineers while also personally contributing.
- Partner with product owners, business stakeholders, and engineers to convert requirements into clear user journeys and scalable solutions.
- Establish and govern reusable design systems, component libraries, interaction patterns, and front-end engineering standards.
- Create prototypes and translate them into production-quality interfaces using React, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS.
- Champion responsive design, usability, and performance.
- Design and integrate REST APIs, services, databases, and enterprise integrations across the full application stack.
- Define clear API contracts, data structures, error-handling patterns, authentication and authorization approaches, and observability requirements.
- Lead architecture reviews, design reviews, code reviews, technical problem solving, and root-cause analysis.
- Promote automated unit, integration, API, UI, accessibility, and end-to-end testing within CI/CD pipelines.
- Mentor engineers, strengthen front-end and full stack capabilities, and establish practical reference patterns the team can reuse.
- Identify and reduce technical debt while balancing delivery commitments, platform standards, security requirements, and long-term maintainability.
Requirements
- Approximately 8 or more years of software engineering experience, including significant full stack application development.
- At least 3 years of experience providing technical leadership for application teams or major engineering initiatives.
- Deep hands-on experience with a modern front-end framework, preferably React and TypeScript.
- Strong knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, CSS, browser architecture, responsive design, and performance optimization.
- Experience creating or extending reusable component libraries and enterprise design systems.
- Demonstrated understanding of UX principles, interaction design, information architecture, usability, and accessible design.
- Strong experience designing, documenting, securing, and consuming RESTful APIs.
- Back-end development experience with Java and Spring Boot, Node.js, or comparable enterprise frameworks.
- Experience with relational databases, Git-based development, automated testing, and CI/CD.
- Strong understanding of secure coding, authentication, authorization, session management, API security, and application logging.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical design discussions, communicate trade-offs, and mentor engineers.
- Hands-on technical credibility across UI, services, APIs, data, testing, security, and production support.
- Ability to simplify complex user and business workflows without compromising control, security, or maintainability.
- Strong collaboration with product, architecture, information security, infrastructure, and engineering partners.
- Clear communication of technical decisions, dependencies, risks, and trade-offs to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
- A player-coach mindset that combines architecture ownership, coding, mentoring, and delivery accountability.
